The Police Assisted Addiction and Recovery Initiative (PAARI) was founded alongside the Gloucester Police Department Angel Initiative in June 2015 and has grown into a movement of nearly 600 law enforcement partners in 34 states. The opioid epidemic is our country’s greatest public health emergency and there were more than 72,000 drug related overdose deaths in the US in 2017. Only 11% of people who need access to treatment for a substance use disorder receive care. Access to treatment is particularly difficult for individuals experiencing homelessness, unemployed individuals, low-income adults, formerly incarcerated adults, low-income veterans, and those with concurrent physical health issues and mental health disorders. Law enforcement officers have a front row seat to the opioid epidemic and a growing number of police departments are motivated to adopt non-arrest programs that connect individuals with substance use disorders to treatment. Members of our National Recovery Corps will strengthen the ability of partnering law enforcement agencies to increase access to care and address addiction and poverty through non-arrest approaches. This program will place VISTAs in police departments to help build, strengthen, and sustain police-led programs to reduce and prevent overdose deaths and help more people with opioid use disorder get into treatment and recovery. This position will be in Winthrop, MA and will serve as part of a larger cohort of PAARI National Recovery Corps VISTAs, spread across the entire nation. This VISTA member will be working with the Winthrop Police Department to strengthen and build their non-arrest program. Individuals with lived experience with addictions, including those who are personally in recovery, are ideal candidates for these service positions.
