  • Max Allen Top 20 Wines of 2020 – La Violetta Spunk Nat

Max Allen goes for the super-fresh for his 2020 Top 20. So much to explore here – check out the link below!

Spunk Nat 2020: “This style of wine is usually sold soon after vintage, and can be cloudy and funky in character because it’s unfiltered and made with no additions. Not all pet-nats are wild, though, as Andrew Hoadley of La Violetta Wines in Denmark, WA, proves. Hoadley is a master of the style, and this wine, a blend of riesling and shiraz with moreish characters of redcurrants and cream, is pristine.”

New York Times’ wine critic Eric Asimov recalls his Best Wine Moments of 2019, including a glass of 2017 Das Sakrileg at the Carlton Wine Room.

“Like sublime meals and glorious journeys, great wines create great memories. They leave impressions to be pondered and stories to be told. I have the privilege of tasting many wines over the course of a year. In 2019, these are the 12 that left the most lasting memories.”

  • The best wines for spring 2019

Gourmet Traveller Sommelier of the Year Leanne Altmann selects her best wines for Spring 2019…

Get onto the Yé-Yé Grisé: “Grisé is built around the florals and spice of gewürztraminer but the cool growing conditions mean the fruit retains a liveliness that the variety sometimes lacks. A hefty splash of riesling and a few buckets of pinots gris and noir provide seasoning, complexity and freshness.”

  • Max Allen in the Fin Review 9th May, 2019

Max Allen visits Great Southern and, in a crusty warehouse-cum-shed, talks turkey with Brave New Wines, Express Winemakers et moi: “Through the looking glass with WA’s rebel winemakers”

“Oustanding rich, textural white wine made from vermentino blended with a little semillon for complexity and some muscat for fragrance: creamy and mouthfilling, it has ravishing flavours of pulpy grape and green melon. In typical Andrew Hoadley fashion, there’s a lovely, sardonic misquote from Fellini on the back label that translates roughly as, “I have nothing to say but I say it anyway.” Take that, all you verbose marketing types.”
