This position is for a 3rd grade classroom in the Transition Learning Support Program, which requires the teacher to be responsible for remediation and grade level content in the areas of reading, math, and written expression.
Specific Duties Include:
- Competence in planning, developing, and monitoring differentiated instructional lessons;
- Evaluation of student progress and performance;
- Communication of expectations and achievement benchmarks clearly to both students and parents;
- Experience in implementing a variety of teaching and learning strategies to teach grade level content to bright students who have mild learning disabilities that may be combined with attention and processing deficits;
- Ability to help all students develop the reading, writing, listening, math, and organizational skills needed for academic progress;
- Application of behavior management techniques that include structure, pacing, motivation, visual supports, positive reinforcement and praise, etc.;
- Competence with technology, using various software programs for academic skills practice, keyboarding, and enrichment, and progress monitoring.
Required Skills:
- Solid understanding of learning differences as well as the best practices and differentiated instructional techniques to support students with complex learning profiles.
- Engaging teaching style and promotion of an inclusive learning environment in the classroom.
- Familiarity with national and state elementary academic standards.
- Working knowledge of and experience in teaching third grade curriculum.
- Passion for and familiarity with the development and learning needs of an elementary student.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills demonstrating the competence and diplomacy that are essential to building strong partnerships with students, parents, and peers.
- Strong organizational and classroom management skills.
- Proficiency with a range of technologies.
- Strong desire to continue learning by taking courses and attending workshops/conferences.
- Ability and willingness to contribute to the Academy through co-curricular activities.
Minimum Qualifications:
- B.A. degree in Learning Disabilities, Reading, Special Education, or Early Childhood Education (with heavy coursework in learning disabilities); Master’s degree preferred.
- A minimum of three years working with elementary students with diagnosed learning differences in a grade level appropriate curriculum.
- Formal training and experience in at least one research-based reading instruction methodology for students with dyslexia.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Working knowledge of brain-based research in instructional methods and best practices for students with complex learning profiles.
- Ability to work with students, teachers, and parents to provide maximum student achievement.
The Teacher, Primary School Transition 3rd Grade is an exempt, salaried, ten-month position. Salary is commensurate with education and experience. The benefits are substantial.
