Job Responsibilities

Serves as the state System of Care Medical Director for Georgia within the Office of EMS and Trauma, providing specialized medical oversight in the development and administration of the system of care designation program and will act as a liaison with designated facilities, state and national professional organizations, and state and federal partners. As the state System of Care Medical Director, provide essential physician leadership for key aspects of designated facilities including system oversight, coordination of guideline development, identification and implementation of best practices, system quality improvement, patient safety, education and research. Furthermore, the state System of Care Medical Director is vital to the overall efficiency and performance of the designation program by promoting integration of direct and indirect oversight for the comprehensive delivery of specialized health care.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with Office of Emergency Medical Service and Trauma leadership and various program coordinators to oversee, develop, maintenance, performance improvement, review and revision of the system of care programs including trauma, burn, stroke, cardiac care, and EMS-C
  • Collaborate with the State EMS Director, and various programs and staff within the Department and OEMST in the development, maintenance, review and revision of operational and clinical guidelines affecting patient care.
  • Collaborate with the State EMS Director, Georgia Trauma Commission, Emergency Medical Services Medical Directors Advisory Council (EMSMDAC) and various hospitals leadership staff in the development, maintenance, review and revision of the Georgia System of Care
  • Coordinate with various systems of care state staff to compile, review and disseminate data across the system related to new and reverified designated facilities, areas of improvement, patient safety, and system-wide criteria deficiencies.
  • Assist with site visits and any other activities related to the designation and/or re-designation of specialty care centers, as assigned by the Office of Emergency Medical Services and Trauma Director
  • Represent the Department at various EMS and system of care meetings, as determined by the Department.
Position may require occasional travel, including overnight travel.
Part-time up to 10 hours per week.

Minimum Qualifications

Medical degree recognized by the Georgia Composite Medical Board (GCMB) AND licensure or license-eligible to practice medicine at a state institution or in the state of Georgia as provided by state law.

Preferred Qualifications:


  • Outstanding level of professionalism, including the ability to exercise good judgment, discretion, tact, and diplomacy.
  • Knowledge of the GA EMS Scope of Practice
  • Experience in the evaluation and management of acutely ill and injured patients in specialty care designated facilities.
  • Experience as a Medical Director for a licensed Georgia EMS agency that is a designated ERZ provider.
  • Experience in site visits, specialty care criteria development and American College of Surgeons policy
  • Effective written and oral communicator.
  • Good analytical, organizational, and time management skills.
  • Knowledge of EMS protocol and policy development.
  • Knowledge of the Department of Public Health Rules and Regulations for Emergency Medical Services 511-9-2.
  • Knowledge in preparedness planning and/or disaster coordination.
  • Knowledge of evidence-based practice
  • knowledge of out-of-hospital care research
