Counselors will assist in the supervision of children ages 6 through 13 years old, during the MOCA Summer Art Camps. This is a temporary position (June 12th - August 16thwith a mandatory inclusivity training on June 4th), responsible for assisting MOCA Summer Camp Educators and actively participating in daily indoor & outdoor recreational activities. MOCA Counselors also serve as mentors and examples to the MOCA Campers. This position works under the direction of the MOCA Summer Camp Manager to provide well-organized and continuous supervision of campers during each 1-week camp session. We are seeking enthusiastic and energetic individuals to help the campers feel at home and in a safe space during the summer.

Major Areas of Responsibility

  • Assist MOCA Educators in supervising and ensuring a safe and healthy environment, both physically and mentally, during instructional time at MOCA’s Summer Art Camps.
  • Advocate for and communicate with your campers to ensure a safe and healthy communication is established in the classroom.
  • Be responsible for the general safety, development, and achievement of the participants in their group; report concerns to leadership and document any issues.
  • Organize classroom materials and help prepare for instruction, snack breaks, lunch and games to ensure the camp is presentable and welcoming.
  • Manage children's behavior and act as a role model and mentor. Model constructive participation in all daily activities and field trips.
  • Ensure all children in assigned group are accounted for onsite, and on field trips; conduct headcount for groups when loading buses, upon trip arrival/departure and throughout the day.
  • Know, enforce, and follow all safety guidelines associated with the camp and all program areas. This includes but is not limited to being responsible for your campers' safety and their whereabouts at all times onsite, and on field trips.
  • Interact effectively and professionally with fellow employees, program participants, supervisors, staff, instructors and the general public.
  • Assist in maintaining accurate program records including incident reports, logbook documentation, and daily attendance.
  • Know and understand ALL emergency procedures associated with the camp program.
  • Punctuality and regular attendance are essential functions of position.
  • Performs special projects and other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Prior experience working or volunteering with children ages 6 – 13
  • Minimum one (1) season as summer camp volunteer or one (1) season of paid experience with a summer camp, school or recreational program; one (1) year prior experience instructing children in a recreational setting, in any of the following areas: visual arts, fashion design, craftsmanship or fine art.
  • Must be 15 years or older.
  • Effective written and oral communication skills;
  • Ability to enforce museum specific etiquette with students;
  • Be able to work collaboratively and inclusively with all constituent groups of students, teachers, museum staff and visitors;
  • Ability to convey a professional appearance and attitude

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ability to exhibit the energy and physical stamina to work with children of varying ages.
  • Ability to work as a member of a team and the ability to accomplish tasks with little direct supervision.
  • Ability to deal with stressful conditions in a calm and professional manner.
  • Skill to work with children of various ages by demonstrating patience, enthusiasm, and the ability to handle disruptive children effectively.
  • May be required to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. in various forms.
  • May be required to work outside for extended periods of time.
  • May be required to sit, stand, or maintain physical activity for extended periods of time.

  • Bilingual in English, Spanish and/or Hatian Creole

Reports to: Summer Camp Manager

Compensation: Seasonal employment; $11 an hour, not to exceed 35 hours a week for the duration of the contract with a minimum of 25 hours a week; All Summer Arts Camp Counselors must participate in a mandatory training on June 4th, 2023. This position requires a level II background check, which includes fingerprinting.

Educators will lead a one-week session, at minimum. Educators are welcome to apply to lead multiple sessions. Educators will use visual aids, digital tools, assessments and checklists to maintain a proper attendance and engagement. All Educators must attend the summer camp training on Sunday, June 4th.

Responsibilities

  • Create and implement creative and engaging presentations for their Session using the curriculum provided. This includes creating examples, modifications for learning styles of the classroom, and showcasing excellent education standards.
  • Maintain a positive, professional, and enthusiastic attitude with staff, parents, and campers.
  • Ensure that activities are effectively and safely implemented following risk management protocol.
  • Maintain clear attendance and submit reports after every class, this includes any behavior reports, pre and post assessments, and updates on session progress during the end of day recap.
  • Maintain in clear contact with the MOCA Edu department.
  • Demonstrate effective problem solving skills, patience, and flexibility.
  • Create accurate pre and post assessments of all campers by using guidelines dictated by The Children’s Trust.
  • Maintain a consistent and punctual schedule.
  • Manage final presentations of student works, creating a clear standard for works to either be stored for the final Showcase or to be taken home by guardians.
  • Other responsibilities as requested.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience. Preferably a Bachelors in Education, Art, Art History or a related discipline.
  • Must have 2 years of experience in the Visual Arts field
  • Minimum 1 year experience working with children in an educational setting;
  • Effective written and oral communication skills;
  • Ability to enforce museum specific etiquette with students;
  • Be able to work collaboratively and inclusively with all constituent groups of students, teachers, museum staff and visitors;
  • Ability to convey a professional appearance and attitude

Requirements

  • Experience in a variety of art making skills including drawing, painting, ceramics, and sculpture.
  • Experience in the arts.

Desired

  • Currently has a Professional Educator Certificate, or pursuing certification;
  • Proficiency in a foreign language desirable: Spanish or Creole.

Reports to: Summer Camp Manager

Terms of employment: $170 per day, Independent contract employment. Monday through Friday from 8:30am-4pm for a complete session; All Summer Arts Camp Educators must participate in a mandatory inclusivity training. This position requires a level II background check, which includes fingerprinting.
