Who You'll Work With
You will be based in our North American offices as part of a distinct team, working to develop a diligence style investment theses for prospective clients. As a part of a core team of investment minded professionals you will work cross-functionally with Strategy & Corporate Finance, Marketing & Sales, McKinsey Transformations, People & Organizational Performance, and Sustainability groups.
What You'll Do
The team delivers rapid, outside-in, diligence-style analysis of public companies to senior McKinsey team leaders (partners and senior partners) and senior external clients.
Every two weeks, you will develop a holistic view of value potential and value levers for a prospective client across a wide range of industries. Working alongside cross-functional teams you will assess financial and operational elements of public entities: identify key business drivers, review detailed financial models, consider workforce health, customer perception, and social and environmental impact. Ultimately, you will be tasked with synthesizing findings to develop an investment thesis which articulates tangible actions the company should take to maximize shareholder value - specifically, operational actions that can be handed-off to an executive with a PE owners mindset focusing on impact.
You will own thesis generation, impact lever sizing, backup analyses and overall document / materials to shape CEO-ready narratives that frame client companies' holistic value-creation agenda. You will cooperate with senior firm leaders on how to translate narratives and agendas into actions for the client.
As a member of the department, you will provide oversight, problem-solving support, and practical industry expertise to the broader team, including to analysts supporting you and coaching client team leaders to act. You will also help systematize, improve, and radiate the approach for developing the holistic impact teardown.
The role will require you to collaborate with our strategy and corporate finance experts to ensure financial analyses are accurate and that operational levers are translated into financial impact and vice versa. You will lead quality control of the analyses supporting the integrated thesis, including the underlying valuation model.
Qualifications
- Investment professional with min 3+ years in an investment/research related role – hedge fund, M&A, PE, investment banking, investor relations, or a related field in progressively senior roles
- Experience working effectively with cross-functional teams and in-depth knowledge/defined involvement in helping frame, design and execute solutions for challenging business situations
- 4-year degree; CFA/MFA/MBA or quantitative master’s degree in a relevant field is preferred 4-year degree required; advanced degree, preferably an MBA or Master’s degree in a relevant field preferred
- Enough familiarity with corporate finance to quality control models and analyses
- Comfort articulating insights and implications from non-financial lenses
- Comfort with building storylines (thesis) that integrate multiple workstreams
- 8+ years of consulting or industry experience in corporate finance, strategy or private equity. Prior experience as a consultant in a professional services firm preferred
- Comfort with ambiguous, ever-changing situations
- Excel, PPTX, story-lining, and synthesis skills
- Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, in English and local office language(s
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team and create an inclusive environment with people at all levels of an organization
