Position Summary:

Come join our nimble and engaging team at the University of Alaska Southeast! The Director of Residence Life is responsible for maintaining a positive, safe, and engaging living/learning community within Housing and provides strategic leadership for the UAS Food Service and Guest Services programs. The Director also serves regionally as the Deputy Conduct Officer and Deputy Care Team Co-Chair for the Juneau, Sitka, and Ketchikan campuses. This is a live-on position with a provided 2-bedroom townhouse apartment on campus (pet friendly) plus a meal plan. This position serves as the primary coordinator for the professional staff on-call rotation for the Juneau Residential Campus.

Duties:

10On-Call Duty Coverage, Crisis Response, and After-Hours Facilities Support: Schedules and covers 24-hour on-call duty for the student housing complex on a weekly rotating basis. Responds to any calls for assistance regarding a disciplinary, health and welfare, safety, facilities, or emergency nature. Addresses any unforeseen or urgent needs as they arise. Provides crisis response and emergency action, initiating the campus crisis response plan and serving as a liaison between the university and community emergency services and agencies. Performs any customer service or administrative tasks that necessitate after-hours attention. Provides support to direct reports when they are in on-call status as needed. Communicates directly with the Dean of Students for high level emergencies. Living on-campus in a university provided residence is required. Ensures compliance and reporting responsibilities with all statutory and regulatory requirements as well as University of Alaska policies and procedures including but not limited to: ADA, Title VII, Title IX, VAWA and the Jeanne Clery Act.Essential
10Summer Conference Services and Support of Recruitment and Marketing Activities: Oversees operations of summer conference housing season, including administrative tasks, guest services, and financial management. In collaboration with the Guest Services Coordinator, Markets Guest Services to retain clients and support new contracts for additional business to maximize occupancy. Maintains customer relations assessing feedback surveys and client satisfaction outcomes. Interfaces with local and national partners to define a conference setting for retreats and special events for the summer. Works with the UAS Office of Admissions to coordinate tours of student housing and overnight stays for prospective students. Partners with Admissions and Financial Aid as members of the Enrollment Management team to review retention data, scholarship impact and other data to understand and promote the on-campus residential experience for current and prospective students.Essential
20Dining & Food Services: Oversees Dining Services operations. Aligns service product delivery of food service operations in concert with housing operations. In conjunction with the Dean of Students and Food Services Manager, strategically analyzes meal plans, price points, food product delivery and menu options to create a seamless service to students. Consults with the campus governance groups to actively engage in feedback to ensure customer satisfaction outcomes. Align branding and messaging (including web site and social media content) for the housing and dining experience under a holistic Residence Life concept. Creatively explores alternative funding opportunities to ensure that dining options are meeting the needs of the diverse student population at UAS. Manages the shared fund balance that includes housing, dining and conference services - streamlining occupancy management decisions to maximize revenue while keeping costs economical for students. Supports signature programming events through team leadership that include housing and dining initiatives.Essential
20Health, Safety, and Wellness: Responsible for ensuring life safety and critical incident training for professional staff and student paraprofessional staff, including but not limited to fire safety education and fire drills, personal safety education, emergency response, student crisis intervention, development and implementation of policies that promote positive community living. Also includes collaboration with local emergency services and law enforcement. Serves as Deputy Chair of the university Care Team consisting of other student services professional staff. Provides back up to Chair of the campus Care Team for critical campus incident decision-making. Serves as back up to the Conduct Officer providing assistance supporting students in Juneau, Sitka and Ketchikan. Mediates conflicts, addresses wellness and safety concerns, and makes appropriate referrals to campus and community resources. Provides leadership for maintenance and facilities safety and renovation cycle. Monitors deferred maintenance and recommends projects based on strategic facilities best practices. Creates capital improvement project list using best practices for deferred maintenance and renovation. Ensures compliance with OSHA and other environmental health and safety protocols.Essential
20Residence Life Operations and Residential Community Engagement: In conjunction with the Dean of Students, sets the vision and develops annual strategic plans for the Department of Residence Life, including all programming, student retention, budget, occupancy management, facilities maintenance and compliance. Responsible for all aspects of residential affairs in Student Housing, including all programming, policy development and enforcement. Actively seeks to establish supportive and mentoring relationships with residents, interacting with students regularly and maintaining a strong sense of visibility, approachability, and availability. Works to develop a strong sense of community and to maintain a safe, vibrant, diverse, inclusive living environment within Residence Life that is conducive for learning. Coordinates student placements, move-in, and move-out, student paraprofessional staff hiring, training, and supervision/development. Represents Residence Life operations, services, and issues on various standing and ad hoc committees.Essential
20Supervision and Staff Relations: Provides guidance, support, and supervision for professional staff in Dining Services and Residence Life and Housing including direct supervision of the Food Services Manager, Associate Director of Residence Life, Guest Services Coordinator, and Maintenance Coordinator. Provides indirect supervision to professional and student staff including the Residence Life Coordinator, Residential Services Coordinator, Food Service Cooks, Resident Advisors, Housing Assistants, and Dining Assistants. Participates in planning and facilitating staff development, training, and in-service sessions. Meets weekly with the Dining and Housing teams. Provides annual evaluation of direct reports and addresses and documents employee and team performance issues. Mediates work-related conflicts, recognizes staff achievements, and maintains positive and developmental work conditions for all staff. Provides oversight to auxiliary collateral assignments including the First Year Experience, New Student Orientation and Transition, and the Campus Store.Essential

UAS Residence Life serves students, staff, and faculty on our campus by providing high quality Housing facilities, Residence Life programming, and Food Service for our constituents in beautiful Juneau, AK. The Director of Residence Life is responsible for maintaining a positive, safe, and engaging living/learning community for residential students, staff, faculty, and guests. The Director also provides strategic leadership to the UAS Food Services and Guest Services programs through direct and indirect supervision of professional staff. 25+ student staff indirectly report to the Director annually.

Duties include management of the 365-day on-call rotation for professional staff, policy enforcement and development, crisis response, budget management, facility management, coordination of health and safety interventions, and coordination of student programming interventions. The Director serves regionally as the Deputy Conduct Officer and Deputy Care-Team Co-Chair for the Juneau, Sitka, and Ketchikan campuses. Ideal candidates will have experience managing a residential campus and designing student-engagement opportunities as well as expertise related to campus safety, threat assessment, and budget and facility management.

This is a live-on position with a provided 2-bedroom townhouse apartment on campus (pet friendly) plus a meal plan with expectations of intermittent periods of working at irregular hours. The anticipated start date for the Director is April 24, 2023.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
Excellent skills in oral and written communication, group dynamics, instruction/programming, advising, working with diverse and/or underrepresented populations, problem-solving, resource management, conflict mediation, and supervision. Requires knowledge of student development theory. Basic skills in organization and administrative functions, clinical interviewing and referral, conflict mediation, confrontation, policy enforcement, crisis intervention, public speaking, group advising, leadership, staff supervision, assessment and evaluation, time management and stress management. Requires computer skills in word processing, desktop publishing, and excel/access. Should have a working knowledge of facility maintenance, office or front desk procedures, health and safety codes, fire and emergency procedures. Should have basic knowledge of legal, governmental, and financial matters as they affect student affairs.

Special skills & abilities: CPR & First Aid certification, willingness to work irregular and unpredictable hours, and moderate lifting and physical activity.

Typical Experience:
  • Required: Three-five years of experience working in a college or university residence life program or equivalent relevant experience.
  • Preferred: Three to Five years of live-in experience in a university residence life program.

Required Education or Training:
  • Required: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university. Master’s degree strongly recommended.
  • Preferred: Master's degree in College Student Personnel, Student Affairs and Higher Education, Counseling, or a related field strongly preferred.

Salary Information:

This is a full-time, 12-month, exempt staff position complete with both a competitive salary and full employee benefits package. New hires will be placed on the UA staff salary schedule, Grade 81, based on education and experience.
