Job description

United Way of Northern Utah Mission: Uniting people and organizations to build a healthy, and well-educated community where individuals, families, and neighborhoods thrive.

Title: Director of Community Impact

Reports to: President and CEO

Direct Reports: Senior Network Facilitator, Elementary Literacy Network Facilitator, Food Security Network Facilitator, Data Systems Manager

Summary of Work: United Way of Northern Utah plays a unique role in the community. Having worked with partners in nonprofit, government, and the private sector for many decades, we take a community-wide lens in measuring and understanding the impact of our collective effort and how we can do more. As such, we convene the United Partnership, a collective impact partnership focused on building a seamless cradle-to-career continuum for Ogden students as well as strengthening the health and economic stability of the community as a whole. Thus, the primary function of the Director of Community Impact is to build a backbone team with the competencies and capacity to improve outcomes in education, economic stability, and health.

Our collective impact effort is organized into two different types of work. First, we convene partnership “networks” focused on distinct, measurable indicators such as kindergarten readiness, third-grade reading, and food security. Second, we work with school districts to provide students and families with robust community schools which provide extended learning opportunities, wrap-around services to meet basic needs, and high-quality school and family engagement. Growing the community school infrastructure to reach more schools and engage more community partners will be an important component of this role.

Key Responsibilities

  • Set a vision and provide supportive, accountable leadership to the Community Impact team.
  • Ensure strong adherence to the use of data including tracking population and program level results, equipping UWNU and partner agencies with excellent data visualization, and a strong, disciplined approach to program evaluation.
  • Fiscal oversight of department budget and grant management; including writing, oversight, and reporting for all grants supporting the Community Impact team with particular attention to the Partnerships for Student Success (PFSS) grant.
  • Cultivate and maintain positive working relationships with key stakeholders/institutions in the Ogden community, such as the school district, OgdenCAN, the health department, and others.
  • Further develop the Community School infrastructure; which includes but is not limited to, seeking funding sources, hiring full-time staff, and improving the number, nature, and quality of wrap-around services.
  • Remain in close communication and partnership with the Promise Partnership, backboned by United Way of Salt Lake.
  • Maintain a particular focus on collaboration with Weber State University (WSU), Ogden Civic Action Network (OgdenCAN), and WSU Community Research Extension (CRE).
  • Recognize that this role, by definition, is focused on building solutions where known solutions do not exist (creating whole community solutions in education, economic stability, and health), which takes a toll on both the supervisor and the supervisees. This dynamic makes staff supervision challenging and requires both thick skin and compassion.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Ability to build relationships, influence strategy, and drive improvement/results
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with individuals with divergent perspectives and across the political spectrum
  • Comfortable discussing issues of race, socio-economics, and inequality in politically diverse settings
  • Systems thinker
  • Familiarity with Results Based Accountability (RBA) and Results Based Facilitation (RBF)
  • High standards of professional ethics and conduct
  • Excellent oral and written communication
  • Independent worker and team player
  • Hard worker, organized, aware of both details and the big picture
  • Ability to plan, manage, and follow through on multiple projects
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain outcome-driven programs

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in a related field or related work experience (e.g. public health, education, social sciences, human services, etc.)
  • Experience facilitating diverse groups of individuals to an actionable and measurable outcome
  • Proficient in multiple software platforms
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Proficient in data manipulation and visualization

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bicultural/bilingual English/Spanish
  • Master’s degree in a related field
  • 5 years working in related field
  • Experience managing large, complex, multi-stakeholder projects
