Labcorp’s Vice President of Corporate Communications is a strategic, business-savvy and creative executive who thrives in a fast-paced, mission-driven organization. This Vice President is a dynamic leader who is well-versed in using communications to advance business strategy, performance, and employee engagement. With a growth mindset, this leader will have a track record of adding value and making an impact in executive, business line, and enterprise communications. The individual will bring a thoughtful perspective to a diverse set of topics and issues, has a “big-picture” perspective and is able to connect the Company’s strategy to all stakeholders through messaging and a variety of channels including digital and social media.

This position will be responsible for leading the Communications team and capability for the enterprise including CEO and executive communications, CSR communications, enterprise and business line media and public relations, financial and M&A communications, enterprise internal communications, and other strategic communications.

The right individual is comfortable with making decisions when there is ambiguity. S/he is highly collaborative and is able to lead through influence by involving a diverse array of internal stakeholders, business leaders, and the Executive team.

Specific responsibilities will include:

  • Team Management / Leadership: The candidate will lead a team of 10-15 people, manage agencies, and influence and advise many more. S/he will set vision, priorities and manage the day to day operations of the direct Communications team and agencies. The individual will be adept at identifying and developing strong talent, and guiding team members to support their impact and advancement. The leader will also contribute to Labcorp’s leadership and strategy as a member of the Executive Leadership Committee and Marketing Leadership team.
  • Communication strategy and messaging: The successful candidate will be responsible for developing Labcorp’s strategic and proactive communications strategy, messaging platform, and plan that aligns and supports the overall objectives of the Company and its leadership. The leader will enable Labcorp to anticipate, identify and advance Labcorp’s reputation through communications.
  • Executive Communications: The leader will oversee strategic communications for the CEO and senior Executive team, including communications plans, messaging, speeches, internal communications, and other materials for the CEO and executive business leaders.
  • Media Relations and External Communications: The leader is well-versed in media and press relations and will create and implement a proactive reputation management and press relations program to favorably position Labcorp and its leadership within top-tier global and national press, as well as trade, business and financial press. The leader’s team will manage inbound/reactive press inquiries and outbound/proactive media outreach, inclusive of oversight of all media interviews and external speaking appearances for senior executives.
  • Financial and M&A Communications: The leader will oversee financial communications in support of earnings reporting, M&A announcements, and other final or transaction-related scenarios in collaboration with Labcorp’s Finance, Legal and Investor Relations teams.
  • Internal and Employee Engagement: The leader will collaborate with Labcorp’s business teams, Human Resources, Marketing, and other teams to connect Labcorp’s strategy to employees through effective employee communications. The team will devise effective communication strategies and materials for management, including town halls, newsletters and employee campaigns. The leader will also be responsible for broad employee communications including managing the Company’s intranet.

  • The ability to earn the trust, confidence, and endorsement of the executive leadership team as a colleague, advisor, and problem solver who is not only a functional expert but a business leader/peer as well.
  • The establishment and execution of an overarching communications strategy, plan, and platform that is aligned with and supports the business goals of Labcorp.
  • Effective leadership and prioritization of the function, including managing the team and ensuring quality standards and timelines are achieved for day-to-day activities.
  • A strategic and proactive employee engagement and internal messaging plan to educate, align, and engage employees around the mission and business objectives including the company’s growth and broader diversity and ESG efforts.
  • Build and develop a team that is strategic, experienced, and excels to advance Labcorp’s internal and external communications capabilities.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS

The successful candidate will have 15+ years of progressively increasing communications experience in planning and executing communications strategies for business lines and enterprise teams. S/he will be a strategic, innovative thinker with the ability to see emerging trends and the big picture, with equal ability in successfully driving projects from development to completion. The VP will have the ability to meet tight deadlines and juggle multiple priorities with quality and attention to detail. S/he will also have demonstrated leadership skills and a proven ability to motivate and manage communications professionals to achieve outstanding results. S/he will have strong written and oral communication skills. The ability to lead and influence teams and the organization through collaboration is a critical element for this role.

Specific experiences and qualifications are not limited to but include:

  • Reputation as a strong leader, with a track record for building a team and developing people in Communications.
  • An ability to forge long term trusted relationships quickly and effectively at all levels, with success collaborating across complex and matrixed organizations.
  • Hands-on experience managing a highly proactive communications strategy and team, with a strong reputation for integrity, creativity and delivery.
  • Track-record of success in navigating complicated and strategic communications, political, and legal issues.
  • A network and positive relationships with top-tier, regional and national media contacts in financial, business and trade press.
  • An ability to write and create communications that ensure clarity and tell a story that inspires employees and encourages them to adopt winning behaviors.
  • Expertise in external, internal, executive and crisis communications.
  • Experience with digital communication platforms including intranet, social, and mobile communications platforms.
  • Experience working in or with a regulated industry with a familiarity of how regulation can impact communications strategies.
  • A true interest and curiosity in healthcare and/or science.

EDUCATION

An undergraduate degree is required; an advanced degree such as an MBA is highly preferred.

COMPENSATION

Compensation will be competitive and commensurate with experience. It will include a base salary, annual performance bonus and long-term incentives.
