Requisition Id 9706

Overview:

We are seeking a senior mechanical design engineer to produce high quality engineering design packages for components and subsystems of a neutron scattering instrument. The position resides in the Instrument Systems Engineering (ISE) Group within the Second Target Station (STS) Project at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

As part of the ISE team, you will have the opportunity to engage in the design, fabrication, and installation processes of a complex, integrated neutron scattering instrument. Each instrument is a scientific experiment station with unique requirements and incorporates custom configurations of neutron optics & choppers, detectors & support structures, positioning devices, vacuum and/or pressure vessels, sample environments, neutron & biological shielding, and others, many of which are first-of-a-kind or one-of-a-kind. In this role, you will work alongside other instrument engineers and scientists to fully develop these component and subsystem designs and may be responsible for overseeing their procurement and fabrication, either directly or in conjunction with STS manufacturing engineers.

Domestic and International travel is infrequent but will be required.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop engineering concepts and requirements from scientific specifications and produce final, detailed, and documented designs for STS Instrument Systems
  • Produce drawings, specifications and other engineering documents
  • Provide direction to other engineers and designers to ensure engineering standards are met, and customer expectations are satisfied
  • Perform and document engineering calculations to ensure safety and component performance
  • Leads and participate in engineering and project reviews
  • Participate in R&D and prototyping of proposed equipment if needed
  • Perform work efficiently to ensure project deadlines are achieved
  • Accurately and reliably communicate technical status and performance to instrument lead engineers and/or STS management
  • Ensure safety and quality by following STS standards and procedures
  • Maintain a solid commitment to implementing and perpetuating ORNL values and ethics

Basic Qualifications:

  • BS in Engineering (typically Mechanical Engineering, but other engineering disciplines will be considered) with 8 or more years of experience in relevant engineering design work. A master’s degree with 5 years of relevant experience will also be considered.
  • Demonstrated ability to quickly grasp, prioritize and analyze complex technical problems
  • Experience working within multi-disciplinary technical teams
  • Experience in 3-D Computer Aided Design (CAD)
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous experience as a design engineer for a neutron scattering instrument development
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment and to set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines
  • Working level proficiency in Creo CAD software and Windchill Project Lifecycle Management software
  • Proficiency in Finite Element Analysis
  • Familiarity with multiple manufacturing processes and their associated design considerations
  • Familiarity with the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code
  • Experience with weldment designs and American Welding Society (AWS) drawing symbology

About the Second Target Station Project:

The Second Target Station (STS) is a >$2Billion Department of Energy project to be constructed at the ORNL Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) over the next decade. The STS will provide wholly new capabilities for the study of a broad range of materials with neutron scattering and support thousands of users from the physical, materials, and applied sciences as well as industry. The science capabilities provided by the instrument suite at the STS will complement those of the two existing neutron scattering user facilities at ORNL, the First Target Station (FTS) of the SNS and the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR). The STS will deliver the highest peak brightness cold neutrons in the world, which together with advances in neutron optics, instrumentation, and detectors, will ensure U.S. leadership in neutron scattering for decades to come. STS will be capable of supporting 22 individual neutron scattering instruments (beamlines), each of which transports neutrons from the source to a shielded end station that houses a user-provided sample along with a suite of detectors. Please see http://neutrons.ornl.gov/sts for more information.

This position will remain open for a minimum of 5 days after which it will close when a qualified candidate is identified and/or hired.
