The Sr. Principal Engineer/Manager II, Engineering-Embedded Software is responsible for leading the embedded software design team to design, develop, and test new and existing product solutions. This person is also responsible for maintaining the technical competencies of the team through mentoring, training, evaluation, and recruitment. This role requires both team leadership and individual contributor skills.

What Will You Do?

In order to grow and build a successful career with The Toro Company, you will be responsible for:

  • Plan and implement the embedded software design and development of new and existing products.

  • Lead the embedded software design team for feasibility and development projects.

  • Manage priority issues, estimate resource needs, and track resource allocation.

  • Ensure that the embedded software design team delivers their work with the necessary quality and within the specified time frame.

  • Lead the embedded software development for electronic technologies, such as microcontroller systems, motor controls, and wireless communication systems.

  • Ensure the quality of the embedded software meets functional safety, regulations, and standards, and all product requirements, including risk assessments and Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA.)

  • Set standards and expectations for embedded software design practices.

  • Evaluate existing technologies, and support existing products throughout their lifecycle.

  • Provide technical mentoring and team member development in embedded software design, testing, and regulatory compliance.

  • Coordinate design activities with other departments, suppliers, and partners, including the exchange of information and documentation.

  • Drive collaboration among cross-functional partners from Engineering, Testing, Marketing, Manufacturing, Quality, Regulatory, etc. to achieve organizational goals.

  • Provide oversight and guidance to the offshore embedded software test team located in India.

  • Drive collaboration between testers and developers to promote best in class software development.

  • As an individual contributor, design and develop solutions, review designs, perform engineering calculations and studies, create comprehensive design documentation, author reports, and investigate field issues.

  • Balance work as a manager/supervisor and as an individual contributor.

What Do You Need?

To be considered for this role, an individual should meet the following minimal requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, engineering technological degree (physics, mechatronics, mechanical) or Electrical Engineering from an accredited program.

  • Sr. Principal Engineer

    • Previous experience leading and mentoring embedded software development team members.

  • Manager II, Engineering

    • 2+ years experience of engineering management.

  • 10+ years of embedded software design and development experience in embedded electronics and controls environments required.

  • Experience in embedded software development in C/C++ with hands-on experience in product design, testing, and manufacturing processes required.

  • Experience with complex electrical, mechanical, and software design and integration for embedded electronics and controls products strongly preferred.

  • Experience in product specification development and system engineering for complex systems required.

  • Experience in requirements decomposition and test traceability strongly preferred.

  • Experience with project and program management strongly preferred.

  • Experience leading troubleshooting activities of design, budget, and schedule issues required.

  • Knowledge of embedded software design verification and validation required.

  • Proficient with software configuration management tools, defect tracking tools, and software peer reviews required.

  • Proven ability to mentor and develop people and advance the organization.

  • Excellent communication skills.

The positions of Sr. Principal Engineer and Manager II, Engineering require an individual to perform similar duties and take similar responsibilities in varying degrees based on demonstrated capabilities, initiative, supervision needed and experience. Overlap of these duties and responsibilities can and will exist as individuals are given opportunities to accept greater responsibilities and gain additional experience. Demonstrated results are the major differentiating factor.

Competitive Salary – The pay range takes into account skills, experience, education, and location. It is not common to be hired at or near the top of the range; compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. A reasonable estimate of the annual pay range is between $123992 - $155000. Cash compensation is one piece of our competitive total rewards package.
