AHP is looking for an experienced, skilled, and versatile writer to contribute to a wide range of client project writing tasks and proposals. We are seeking candidates with a minimum of eight years’ experience writing about issues related to behavioral health, such as the topics listed above, and drafting winning proposals.

Writers are an essential and integral part of AHP project teams. They help ensure quality in all written deliverables, including, for example, by crafting appropriate, understandable, tailored content for the intended format and audience. They manage project tasks, work with subject matter experts, and often interact and build relationships with clients, including federal and state governments and for-profit and nonprofit community-based organizations.

Job Duties:

  • Work with other writers, clients, and AHP project staff to clarify project purpose and determine project approach.
  • Conduct research from multiple sources of information as indicated, including interviews, focus groups, peer-reviewed literature, and reports.
  • Develop content appropriate for intended audience and format (e.g., training, presentations, curriculum, manuals, fact sheets).
  • Adhere to style guidance as indicated, such as the guidance outlined by the U.S. Government Publishing Office (GPO), the American Psychological Association (APA), or AHP.
  • Ensure appropriate grammar, readability, conciseness, and clarity of all content.
  • Strive to advance equity and well-being in all content and uses person-first language.
  • Work with various staff, such as AHP’s graphic designers, copyeditors, and presentation specialists, to produce high quality deliverables.
  • Contribute to proposals and new business development efforts.
  • Manage project tasks, including timelines and budgets.

California-specific Experience

Experience and knowledge in one or more of these areas is a plus.

  • California state government or counties
  • Adult and senior care facilities serving social security income (SSI) applicants.
  • Housing options for individuals experiencing homelessness.

Education and Training:

  • A B.A. or B.S. in writing, English, health care communications, mental health, or social science discipline, plus eight years of experience as a writer; or
  • An M.S. or M.A. in writing, English, health care communications, mental health, or social science discipline.
  • Six years of experience as a writer; and
  • Expertise in instructional design, course development, or writing training content is a plus.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Proficient in writing clearly and succinctly in a variety of communication styles and formats.
  • Skilled in crafting content appropriate for the format that resonates with the target audience.
  • Adept in working with subject matter experts on deliverables and proposals.
  • Competent in managing multiple projects on a variety of teams in an often fast-paced environment.
  • Accomplished in meeting deadlines and prioritizing competing demands and priorities.
  • Capable of leading discrete tasks.
  • Efficient in learning new concepts, subjects, processes, and technology.
  • Skilled in synthesizing and translating technical information into understandable content.
  • Experienced in proposal development in response to federal, state, or community-based organization requests.
  • Practiced in building productive and mutually positive staff and client relationships.
  • Able to accept and solicit feedback from others as part of team process.
  • Familiar with GPO, APA, and other style guidelines.
  • Proficient in MS Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Capable of learning and using new software and virtual platforms.

Salary Range: $80,000 - $90,000

AHP, in an effort to be transparent with applicants about salary and in compliance with various state pay disclosure requirements, publishes the following information which is current as of the date of posting. The base salary range above represents the low and high end of the AHP salary range for this position. Actual salaries will vary and may be high or low in the range based on various factors including but not limited to location, experience, and education. The range listed is just one component of AHP’s total compensation package for employees.
