Summary: Family Service Association is seeking a Senior Accountant to join our team. Reporting to the Controller, the Senior Accountant will be responsible for overseeing general accounting, financial systems, and recordkeeping. The successful candidate will have strong analytical and problem-solving skills, experience in a fast-paced general accounting office, and the ability to work independently and in teams.

Primary Job Responsibilities:

  • Reconciling daily cash transactions to bank activity across multiple bank accounts and researching and resolving any variances noted. (15%)
  • Reviewing daily cash receipts for incoming ACH and wire sources and matching the deposit totals to the supporting documents. Resolving discrepancies between actual amounts received vs. support provided primarily through written and verbal contact with other departments or the bank. Posting ACH and Wire transactions to the general ledger. (15%)
  • Reviewing, researching, and processing direct cash receipts journals for incoming payments, interdepartmental allocations, transfer requests, corrections, and other transactions such as reclassifications. (20%)
  • Researching unidentified ACH/Wires received. (5%)
  • Preparing ACH/Wire requests from departments and external remitters. (5%)
  • Monthly reconciliation and posting required entries for selected processes and general ledger accounts, including bank and credit card merchant fees, and ADP tax payments. (15%)
  • Reviewing and reconciling various assigned balance sheet accounts. Participating in the production of year-end audit schedules. (15%)
  • Acting as a liaison between the Department Managers/Program Administrators to coordinate efforts in meeting fiscal year-end deadlines. (5%)
  • Performing other duties, as assigned, to meet the operating needs of the Accounting Department. (5%)

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in accounting or related field and/or equivalent experience and training, with at least two to five years of progressive work experience in a fast-paced general accounting office.
  • Several years of previous experience or education in finance or in a substantially similar position.
  • Experience working independently and in teams.
  • Ability to apply intermediate accounting concepts in the completion of assignments.
  • Analytical skills to comprehensively analyze and interpret policies, procedures, and situations in a multifaceted way and possess strong problem skills to develop innovative solutions to complex issues.
  • Ability to assemble complex budgets, perform reconciliation of ledgers and financial accounts, and develop spreadsheets and databases.
  • Excellent proficiency with Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word. Experience with report-writing packages or data extraction software is highly desired.
  • Organizational skills to work with changing priorities and demanding workload, independently manage and monitor multiple accounts simultaneously, and meet multiple and variable priorities and deadlines.
  • 9. The ability to think analytically and creatively is essential, as is the ability to implement solutions effectively.
  • Knowledge of budgetary cycles and practices and personnel/payroll practices.
  • Advanced Excel skills including Pivot Tables, and VLOOKUPs.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills are essential, with the ability to communicate (orally and in writing) in a professional, clear, concise, and respectful manner.
  • Ability to work in a standard office environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience using M.I.P. Fund Accounting system is a plus but not required.
  • Knowledge of non-profit billing is a plus but not required.
  • Administrative experience in a non-profit environment, including experience developing timelines, policies and procedures, contract and grant administration, and research and fund accounting.
  • Experience working with proposals and grant award management or financial management, including federal and/or state research awards is preferred.
  • Presentation and communication skills to present statistical and financial information in appropriate and user-friendly formats.
  • Strong planning, analytical, and communication skills to anticipate challenges, analyze problems, and implement financial controls.
  • Ability to read and interpret terms and conditions of contracts.
  • Ability to reconcile outside institutional invoices with internal systems.
