Job description
GBH enriches people's lives through programs and services that educate, inspire, and entertain, fostering citizenship and culture, the joy of learning, and the power of diverse perspectives.
At GBH, we believe in the advantages of coming together to build community, mentor and learn from colleagues, and connect more deeply with our mission. As a result, the majority of our staff are hybrid and work both from home and onsite. Our current hybrid approach requires staff to work onsite a minimum of one day each week: every Tuesday. Hybrid staff are also welcome to come in additional days each week or may be asked to come in on other days by their manager.
All employees who will be working on-site at any GBH facility and/or attending GBH events are required to be up to date with their COVID-19 vaccines as defined by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) unless a request for an accommodation on medical or religious grounds has been requested and approved by GBH.
DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW
GBH News is transforming into one cohesive, audience-focused, multiplatform news organization that tells the most interesting and distinctive local stories of the day. Our journalism is infused and informed by the diverse communities we serve. We are among the fastest-growing local news providers in Greater Boston and draw on the talent of a multiplatform newsroom that includes GBH 89.7, Boston’s Local NPR; television; and digital reporting. Our goal - through in-depth, high-quality journalism - is to inform, educate and enlighten our audience and build a collaborative newsroom culture.
JOB OVERVIEW
We are looking for a reporter to join our education team at a critical moment in history. The city of Boston is buffeted by debates around how to remedy kids’ pandemic learning loss and fix long standing educational attainment inequities. Boston’s public schools are also in the midst of a contentious state-required turnaround and a superintendent in her first year on the job.
Although Massachusetts’ K-12 educational system is well-funded and much-vaunted nationally, its success often overshadows the stark challenges it faces educating students of color, immigrant children, English language learners and marginalized young people.
We are looking for an enterprising reporter who is curious about the barriers preventing a high-quality education, as well as state-of-the-art solutions to problems. The right person for this job will seek to understand Greater Boston’s traumatic racial history and how it continues to influence the educational lives of children today.
This landscape makes Greater Boston rich territory for a hungry reporter interested in high impact, solution-oriented stories. We want someone who is unafraid to challenge educational leadership when warranted, take on big stories and hit the ground running.
We want to engage and expand our already large audience of students, families, educators, administrators, activists and academics by telling the untold or overlooked stories in a region that places a premium on educational attainment. As an NPR member station, we also have the capability to share our best journalism with a national audience.
This position is based in Boston and will report to GBH’s education editor. We want someone willing to experiment in new or unfamiliar platforms, learning from radio, digital print and TV industry veterans. Just bring a spirit of curiosity and cooperation, and an ability to accept constructive feedback.
We are a collaborative newsroom of journalists who believe independent and accessible reporting, particularly around issues in education, is vital to democracy. That has been the commitment of GBH to the community for generations and we take that role seriously.
As GBH’s education reporter, you can mine Greater Boston’s rich K-12 educational landscape for untold or underreported issues that matter.
