Adult Psychiatrists
Adult Inpatient Psychiatric serves acute and chronically mentally ill patients by providing high quality psychiatric clinical and therapeutic care. The unit specializes in administering care to adult patients who display challenging behaviors and/or who may have comorbid medical diagnoses that cannot be accommodated by other mental health facilities in Colorado. The adult unit comprises 57 beds over a span of 3 units. The multiple units allow for the development of a diverse set of nursing and therapeutic skills including de-escalation techniques, therapeutic awareness and communication. Staffing ratios include a nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:5 and behavioral health tech ration of 1:7. These ratios create safe, dignified, individualized patient care. Job Summary

Under minimal supervision performs professional psychiatric nurse practitioner or physician assistant care in the examination, diagnosis and treatment of psychiatric patients, according to statutory limitations for advanced practice nurses and physician assistants, as part of our multidisciplinary reactive and proactive consultation-liaison (C-L) psychiatry teams. Examines and diagnoses patients and develops treatment plans. Performs testing, referral to physicians as needed, writes prescriptions, and performs administrative support functions as needed.

Essential Functions:
  • Patient Care
  • Primary clinical responsibility will be to proactively screen new admissions that come onto medicine, surgery, intensive care, pediatric, and labor/delivery services for psychiatric needs. This will be done through a combination of chart review, speaking to primary medical teams, and intermittently rounding with primary teams.
  • When patients are identified as likely to clinically benefit from psychiatric services, the psychiatric nurse practitioner or physician assistant will determine whether their interventions will suffice (e.g. psychotropic medication recommendations, brief supportive therapy, distribution of community mental health resources) or whether a patient would benefit from consultation from psychiatrists, psychologists, and/or social workers from our reactive C-L psychiatry service or from our addiction C-L service.
  • Once proactive screening is complete for the day, there may also be opportunity for the psychiatric nurse practitioner or physician assistant to assess and treat patients seen on the reactive C-L psychiatry team.
  • When seeing patients:
  • Monitors and evaluates the psychiatric condition of each patient and in collaboration with the psychiatrist and other disciplines and standards of care, or by applying appropriate protocols, makes decisions regarding treatment changes. Refers patient to specialized services as needed. Determines and assesses the mental health status of patients by reviewing records and obtaining comprehensive behavioral health histories. Gathers history from patient, providers, and family/significant others as needed.
  • Analyzes assessment data in order to formulate a unique plan of care through identified needs. Relates assessment findings to multidisciplinary team as appropriate. Identifies and reports any abnormalities in assessment data. Performs best practices and maintains HIPAA compliance. Orders and prescribes appropriate medications in accordance with pharmaceutical guidelines and standards and within the limits of the appropriate statutory limitations or refers patient to a caregiver in a specialty area. Initiates, performs, or directs other health care professionals to perform screenings and diagnostic tests. Orders initial and/or routine laboratory tests and follows up on results, orders additional tests or refers patient to appropriate provider.
  • Administrative and Documentation
  • Completes required documentation legibly, thoroughly and in a timely manner. Documentation is complete, concise and reflects care given. Prepares and maintains complete and accurate charts, case files and records. Participates in the clinical education of healthcare students/trainees, and new staff. Enhance professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, reviewing current literature, and attending in-service meetings and workshops.
  • Collaborates with other health care professionals in assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating care for individuals, collaborates with Risk Management to resolve identified and potential problems and ensures proper reporting of events as dictated by policy. Promotes positive interpersonal (customer) relationships with fellow employees, physicians, patients and visitors. Treats these individuals with courtesy, dignity, empathy and respect; consistently displays courteous and respectful verbal and non-verbal communications. Adheres to, complies with and demonstrates support for the mission and values of Denver Health. Supports and adheres to the Denver Health Dozen. Ensures confidentiality of patient information by creating and maintaining a secure and trusting environment by not sharing information learned on the job, except when necessary in the performance of the job responsibilities or to improve a patient's care.
  • Has regular and predictable attendance.
  • Ensures all duties, responsibilities and competencies are conducted in a manner that is effective and appropriate to patients/clients to whom care/service is being provided. Demonstrates knowledge and applicability of the principles of growth and development over the life span, as well as demonstrating the ability to assess data reflecting the patient's status and interpreting appropriate cultural information of the patients) to whom care/ services is being delivered/provided.
  • Employee has completed and met their clinical competency standards.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education:
  • Master's Degree Required

Work Experience:
  • 1-3 years related clinical experience preferred.

Licenses:
  • CNAA-Certified Nursing Administration Advanced - AONL - American Organization for Nursing Leadership Required and
  • PA-Physician Assistant - State Medical Board Required and
  • BLS-Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) - AHA - American Heart Association Required

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledgeable and compliant with all regulatory standards, including specialty level requirements. Knowledge of major concepts, principles and theories related to substance abuse and psychiatric disease processes.
  • Skill in utilizing the principles and practices of effective communication to elicit pertinent history from patients and negotiate problem solving.
  • Skill in performing patient assessments, formulating treatment plans for patients.
  • Knowledge of appropriate administration and prescription of psychiatric medications.
  • Knowledge of individual and group dynamics and treatment methods to assist patient in achieving goals.
  • Skill in preparing written reports, medical records, and other documentation.
  • Ability to be actively involved in multidisciplinary teams relevant to quality improvement.
  • Ability to serve as a consultant to resolve/discuss ethical issues.
  • Ability to use computers and computer systems.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite; Excel, Outlook, and Word.
