Postdoctoral fellow position to study Subconcussive Neurodegeneration in the Department of Kinesiology— Indiana University School of Public Health-Bloomington

The Clinical Neurotrauma Laboratory, under the direction of Dr. Kei Kawata, is seeking an ambitious, motivated postdoctoral fellow to join their team. This is an institution-funded position for a minimum of two years. The position includes benefits and compensation that are in congruent with NIH stipend levels. Applications will be reviewed on an ongoing basis, but applications received by 10 November 2022 will be given full consideration, and the search will remain open until suitable candidate is found. The earliest anticipated start date is 15 January 2023 but is negotiable.

The Clinical Neurotrauma Laboratory studies the causes, modifying factors, and consequences of traumatic brain injury with particular emphasis on concussive/subconcussive neurodegeneration. We use a multimodal approach that combines fluid biomarkers, neuro-ophthalmologic measures, head impact kinematics, and neuroimaging.

Responsibilities: The successful applicant will be expected to lead studies and generate new knowledge that is congruent with the overall mission of the laboratory. This includes generating peer-reviewed publications and pursue postdoctoral fellowship grants (e.g., F32, K99) from the NIH and CTSI. Resources are available for travel to scientific meetings and formal training is available with regards to grant writing, research ethics, rigor and reproducibility, and clinical trial management. Dr. Kawata, who holds multiple NIH fundings as a PI, will individually train this postdoctoral fellow on the fellowship/transition grants. There will also be opportunities to develop your own independent research interests and to gain expertise in various state-of-the-art neurologic assessments.

Qualifications: Applications are invited from any relevant discipline including neuroscience, biomedical engineering, psychology, kinesiology, exercise physiology, cognitive science, computer science, athletic training, etc. Experience/expertise in biomedical or clinical neurological assessments is desired but not necessary as long as the candidate is willing to learn techniques. Candidates must have received a doctoral degree from an accredited educational institution by the start of appointment. Experience with human subject research is required, including data collection, analysis, and interpretation. Candidates should possess strong scientific writing skills.

Application Procedure: Provide CV, cover letter summarizing research interests and fit for position, writing sample, and a list of three references. Interested candidates should submit applications at: https://indiana.peopleadmin.com. Applications will not be accepted via Indeed.

About us: The Clinical Neurotrauma Laboratory is a well-funded, high publishing laboratory in the area of concussion and subconcussive neural injury. The lab currently houses 1 postdoctoral fellow, 4 PhD students, 6 MS students, and 6 pre-med research assistants. We combine laboratory subconcussion model with naturalistic field studies to precisely study concussive and subconcussive neural burden using blood biomarkers (proteomic/microRNA/exosome), neuro-ophthalmologic measures, and advanced neuroimaging. Our collaboration network is broad, as we collaborate with many notable neurotrauma scholars, as well as interdisciplinary scholars in the areas like biomedical engineering, gastroenterology, biological informatics, and psychiatry. We are a primary core member of the Imaging Research Facility (IRF), which is located across the street, has a Siemens Prisma MRI system and associated computing system exclusively for research use, as well as a mock MRI scanner for subject training. The IRF employs a full-time MR physicist and technicians who run the scanner. Three of our PhD students are level-2 MRI operator who can independently operate the MRI scan.
