About This AmeriCorps Position

Address educational equity through mentoring refugee youth focusing on high school juniors and seniors via Soft Landing after school programming. Engage high school students in career exploration activities including college attainment. Support refugee youth to be enrolled in school in a timely fashion by attending enrollment meetings and school tours. Work with IRC interpreters to translate school related information into client languages as needed. Support families to orient them to schools and train Missoula County Public Schools, University of Montana and private school staff on how to work with refugee students. Set the stage for academic success by assisting families in completing all childcare, after-school, and early education facility applications as well as any applicable scholarship applications. About This AmeriCorps Position

The AmeriCorps College Coach will collaborate with FPCC and community organizations to plan and implement youth programming in high schools on the reservation. FPCC will allow the member to connect career and college mentors with college and high school students on the FPCC campus. FPCC collaborates with the Fort Peck Tribes Cultural Resources Department to provide career and educational opportunities to K-12 and college students. The member will also advocate for student wellness and support mental health. Communicate with FPCC departments and professors to collaborate on curriculum development. Develop opportunities for college students to learn more about careers in the cultural resource, anthropology, and museum fields. Collaborate with Fort Peck Reservation High Schools and other community organizations to implement cultural and service-learning activities. Fort Peck Community College is one of the seven tribal community colleges in the state. The college is located on the Fort Peck Assiniboine & Sioux Reservation in Northeast Montana. FPCC was chartered by the Fort Peck Assiniboine and Sioux Tribes in 1978. The decision to found FPCC was based on the reservation's need to provide opportunities for post-secondary education and community service in their home communities. FPCC offers 25 associate degree and vocational programs for local residents and businesses. FPCC is a two-year degree-granting community college that offers programs to meet the career goals of its students and the training needs of the reservation. To meet the unique educational needs of Indian people, Fort Peck Community College believes that the opportunity for higher education must be provided on the reservation. Since many of the people choose not to leave their homeland, it is necessary that education be brought to them. FPCC is committed to preserving Indian culture, history, and beliefs, and to perpetuating them among the Indian people of all ages. FPCC promotes self-awareness through education necessary to build a career, a lifestyle, and to achieve a true sense of self-pride. Although FPCC does not deny anyone the opportunity for higher education, the institution’s primary purpose is to serve the American Indian population of the Fort Peck Reservation. Montana Campus Compact (MTCC) serves as the intermediary for this project. MTCC is a CEO-led coalition of colleges and universities that support civic engagement, service learning, and volunteerism across the state. Every year we place cohorts of full-time, part-time, and summer AmeriCorps members with schools, colleges, nonprofits, and government agencies in Montana.
