What does a Mortgage Lender Do?

As our Mortgage Lender, you'll originate, underwrite and close secured real estate loans for the bank's portfolio and for sale to the secondary market. You'll build positive relationships with potential and existing real estate customers, agents and other financial institutions always staying focused on the customer's needs.

Mortgage Lender Responsibilities:

  • Receive and screen loan applications: request credit status, banking, and other references, conduct on-site inspections, order appraisals, and other required duties
  • Correspond with or interview applicant creditors to resolve questions regarding the application.
  • Analyze applicant's financial status, credit and property evaluation to determine feasibility of granting loan request to loan committee for approval; communicate loan decision to applicants.
  • Complete adherence to all policies and practices of the bank and its applicable regulatory agencies.
  • Be able to recognize potential problems with loans. Ability to suggest repayment schedules or other alternatives with delinquent borrowers and loan collections.
  • Direct and participate in the closing of approved real estate loan agreements.
  • Maintain positive contacts with businesses, realtors, developers, and other potential loan customers and provide information regarding real estate programs and services.
  • Participate in community events and activities to support Pride in Peoples.

Mortgage Lender Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required, college education preferred.
  • 4-6 years previous banking/finance experience required.
  • Excellent communication skills as evidenced by the ability to interact face-to-face, over the telephone, or in writing with customers and co-workers.
  • Excellent knowledge and understanding of regulatory and compliance issues affecting the lending department and the institution overall.
  • Strong math skills.
