Position Description

This is a Non-Civil Service position located with the Davidson County Sheriff's Office.

Leads and performs a variety of maintenance, repair, and alteration work on buildings, mechanical systems, and structures. Specializing in HVAC. Performs related duties as required.

Typical Duties

  • Leads and performs preventative maintenance on environmental systems.
  • Replaces or cleans filters.
  • Checks refrigerant levels and adds as needed.
  • Cleans and/or repairs vents and ducts.
  • Maintains and/or replaces thermostats.
  • Installs and troubleshoots heating, air conditioning and refrigeration units.
  • Balance air and water treatment systems in accordance to HVAC protocols.
  • Provides technical assistance with the design and implementation of HVAC systems.
  • Reads and interprets instructions and safety procedures associated with HVAC process.
  • Reads and understands local building codes.
  • Completes repair work utilizing hand and power tools.
  • Diagnoses failures in equipment and initiates necessary repairs.
  • Repairs and maintains toilets, sinks, water fountains, and drainage pipes.
  • Works with high and low voltage such as 480, 277, 240, 120 and 24.
  • Installs and repairs pumps, motors, fan coils and piping.
  • Replaces or repairs electrical switches, fixtures, and related systems.
  • Replaces parts in any motorized or electrical machinery.
  • Repairs and maintains building fixtures, furniture, electrical, and plumbing systems.
  • Replaces or installs doors, locks, windows, and related hardware.
  • Repairs furniture and related items.
  • May apply paint or do touch-up work on furniture.
  • Ensures that all buildings safety features are operational.
  • Inspects fire extinguishers as scheduled.
  • Checks alarm and/or sprinkler systems.
  • Checks for and reports signs of vandalism, theft, or break-ins.
  • Performs routine administrative duties.
  • Requisitions supplies and equipment.
  • Assists in establishing repair priorities; keeps simple records and makes reports.
  • Trains new employees.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED/SUPERVISION RECEIVED

This classification may lead Maintenance Mechanics.

This classification receives general supervision and reports to a designated supervisor, who reviews assignments and is consulted on complex or unusual matters.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The work environment involves moderate to high risk or discomforts which require special safety precautions, e.g., working under extreme outdoor weather conditions, working around moving parts, electrical systems, carts, or machines; irritant chemicals; etc. Employees may be required to travel to various work locations, and use protective clothing or gear such as masks, coats, goggles, gloves, or shields.

Employees will be required to be on-call.

Employees are responsible for the safety of themselves, other employees, inmates, the general public, and governmental property.

The work of this classification requires some physical exertion such as walking, climbing, bending, stooping, stretching, or similar activities. Employees are required to carry medium to heavy equipment. Employees must be able to finger, grasp, and have sensation in their hand. Employees must have no restrictions to fumes, chemicals, or smells.

Employees are considered essential in the safe operation of government facilities. Employees are to work as scheduled. Employees must be able to work various shifts, extended shifts, weekends, and holidays. Employees must be able to work in all DCSO buildings.

Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma and minimum of 4 years commercial HVAC experience.
Universal refrigerant certification.

Valid Driver License may be required for some positions in this classification.

Candidates with accreditations earned in a foreign institute are encouraged to apply.

Note: Per Metro Ordinance No. SO94-1078. All employees of the Metropolitan Government shall be residents of the State of Tennessee or become residents of the state within six (6) months of employment as a prerequisite to employment with the Metropolitan Government.

Preferred Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of equipment, methods, and tools used in the maintenance and repair of industrial, correctional, or mechanical equipment.
  • Knowledge of lockout/tag-out protocols.
  • Knowledge of building safety codes and requirements.
  • Knowledge of electrical circuits and devices related to building maintenance.
  • Knowledge of the operation and repair environmental control systems and related building equipment.
  • Knowledge of plumbing, electrical, and carpentry methods.
  • Knowledge of fabricating equipment parts to meet specialty needs or replace parts
  • Experience to repair and maintain environmental control systems and plumbing and electrical systems.
  • Experience to repair and maintain furniture, doors, windows, and related hardware.
  • Experience to use hand and power tools, safety equipment, and related maintenance equipment.
  • Experience to use judgment and take initiative.
  • Experience to plan details of work.
  • Experience leading or training employees.
