Health Technician (Surgical) - GS-0640-09 - Naval Medical Center San Diego (NMCSD)

Downtown San Diego is located on San Diego Bay. Balboa Park encompasses several mesas and canyons to the northeast, surrounded by older, dense urban communities including Hillcrest and North Park. To the east and southeast lie City Heights, the College Area, and Southeast San Diego. To the north lies Mission Valley and Interstate 8. The communities north of the valley and freeway, and south of Marine Corps Air Station Mirmar, include Clairemont, Kearny Mesa, Tierrasanta, and Navajo. Stretching north from Miramar are the northern suburbs of Mira Mesa, Scripps Ranch, Rancho Penasquitos, and Ranch Bernado. The far northeast portion of the city encompasses Lake Hodges and the San Pasqual Valley, which holds an agricultural preserve. Carmel Valley and Del Mar Heights occupy the northwest corner of the city. To their south are Torrey Pines State Reserve and the business center of the Golden Triangle. Further south are the beach and coastal communities of La Jolla, Pacific Beach, Mission Beach, and Ocean Beach. Pont Loma occupies the peninsula across San Dego Bay from downtown. The communities of South San Diego (an Enclave), such as San Ysidro and Otay Mesa, are located next to the Mexico-United States border and are physically separated from the rest of the city by the cities of National City and Chula Vista. A narrow strip of land at the bottom of San Diego Bay connects these southern neighborhoods with the rest of the city.

Responsibilities:
Performs suture removal and assist in surgery as a circulating technician, scrub technician, and/or first assist. Acts as an advocate for providing a safe working environment. Follows established safety practices by proper use and storage of equipment. Reports any malfunctioning of equipment for repair and any safety hazards. Ensures proper handling of any hazardous materials. Demonstrates knowledge of unit response to disasters and fires and location of crash carts.

Screens patients for appointments by measuring and documenting vital signs such as blood pressure, heart rate, respiratory rate, temperature, and pain level. Schedules appointments. Answers telephones. Retrieves lab and radiological data from CHCS. Scans completed SF600's and affiliated forms documenting patient care. Cleans cerumen from patient ear canals.

Cleans and/or sterilizes instruments and equipment used. Performs audiological testing and evaluations. Conducts preoperative administrative and clinical preparation of patients for Assure cleanliness of all workspaces and operating suites.

Restocks and orders supplies. Utilizes various computer programs and systems (CHCS/surgery scheduling) to update patient data and information. Uses same systems to retrieve patient date for providers. Operates facsimile machine and photocopier as required. Receives and directs incurring patient telephone calls to the appropriate individual for further assistance. Provides customer service styled information by telephone or in person. Attends and participates in training and other meeting, as required, to maintain skills and upgrade information provided through collaboration.

Delivers laboratory specimen to appropriate testing area. Complies with infection control guidelines and practices universal precautions when handling lab specimen. Maintains knowledge of instructions, policies, standards for the clinic and the command. Maintains confidentiality of patient related issues and intervenes to protect patient information.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
Must be a US Citizen

Completion of Hospital Corps School, Surgical Technologist School, and Otolaryngology Technician on-the-job training or civilian equivalent for contract or GS employees.

Current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS).

Knowledge of Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) related procedures.

Knowledge of ENT related surgeries.

Knowledge of the operation of all required ENT equipment.

One year of specialized experience which includes providing assistance to the medical surgical team (e.g., surgeon, anesthetist, or registered nurse) in the operating room performing the following: preparing and careening patients for surgery; passing medical instruments or drugs or supplies during surgery.
