Description of Job

The Work Unit:
The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment's (CDPHE) environmental programs are responsible for safeguarding the public's health by preventing harmful exposures to a wide array of health hazards. The environmental programs administer and enforce laws regulating air, water, and land pollution; administer authorities delegated by the EPA, including the Clean Air Act, Clear Water Act, and Resource Conservation and Recovery Act; and administer state statutes including solid waste management, recycling, and environmental cleanup. The environmental programs consist of four divisions and staffing for four Type I commissions including the Air Quality Control Commission and Water Quality Control Commission. Overall, the environmental programs has 500+ positions and a budget of over $241 million dollars. Environmental program staff use a combination of epidemiology, public outreach, technical and compliance assistance, permitting, monitoring, inspections, and enforcement as tools to help public and private facilities and individuals understand and comply with state and federal environmental regulations. The environmental program staff include scientists, engineers, technicians, administrators, and environmental specialists, among others.

What You'll Be Doing:
This position serves as Environmental Health and Protection Operations Specialist at the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment. The position supports the Environmental Health and Protection Director by providing expertise and support in legislative operations needs. The position coordinates complex, cross functional,
organization-wide projects or initiatives. This position tracks Department performance against established goals and makes associated recommendations to maximize performance. The position supports the Environmental Health and Protection Director by performing executive leadership review, approval and similar duties as it relates to personnel, IT, fiscal operations.

Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights

Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in business, public administration, engineering, or physical, natural, or environmental science or closely related degree;
AND
Six years of full time professional experience in operations management and/or environmental protection, two of which must have included experience with public or business administration, establishing goals and objectives, as well as developing and managing a budget and staff to achieve program goals and objectives.

This experience must be substantiated within the Work Experience section of your application. "See Resume" will not be accepted. In addition, part-time work will be prorated.

Substitutions:
Additional appropriate experience in operations management or environmental protection will substitute for the degree requirement on a year-for-year basis. Additional appropriate education with a degree in business, public administration, engineering, or physical, natural, or environmental science or closely related degree will substitute for the required general experience on a year-for-year basis, but not the two years of specific experience.

Conditions of Employment:

  • A pre-employment criminal background check and drug test will be conducted as part of the selection process. Felony convictions or conviction of crimes of moral turpitude or convictions of misdemeanors related to job duties may disqualify you from being considered for this position.   • Must maintain ability and willingness to independently travel (approximately 2 to 3 days per month).
