Entry Level Mechanical Engineer (Carbon Capture)

General Summary
This position assists the technical concept planning and experiment design for a customer solution, applying new or advanced technologies as appropriate. The position is located at The National Carbon Capture Center (NCCC) which is a U.S. Department of Energy-sponsored research facility focused on finding breakthroughs in next-generation carbon capture technologies.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Work with on-field technology developers for the design, operation, and evaluation of systems pertaining to pre and post-combustion carbon capture, including combustion aerosol characterization in sub-micron range using Electrical Low-Pressure Impactor (ELPI+TM), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Ambient Particulate Monitoring, and other emerging gas analysis technologies
- Assess client needs, formulate technical approaches, and assist in developing RFPs
- Perform a full lifecycle product development – Design, Develop, Test Prototypes, Manufacture and Implement
- Have knowledge of designing process equipment, to include piping, vessels, heat exchangers, pumps, motors, blowers, valves, controllers, sensors, data acquisition, and interface and networking equipment
- Familiarity in 2D and 3D CAD mechanical modeling software (e.g., Creo, AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or other)
- Produce 3D drawings and other fabrication documents
- Work on problems where analysis of data requires knowledge of the underlying scientific principles and experimental procedures under the direction of senior technical personnel
- Contribute to the development of a strategic vision and execution of research projects for next-generation carbon capture technologies
- Evaluate experimental gas analysis design and methods and recommend alternative and improved methods of achieving desired results
- Understand and fully utilize the application of standard mechanical and thermodynamic principles, theories, concepts and techniques
- Maintain knowledge of engineering discipline through familiarity with current engineering literature
- Mathematical computing and analysis tools knowledge (Python/Matlab, Excel, LabView, etc.)
- Be comfortable in creating and using PFD’s and P&ID’s
- Possess strong interpersonal skills to work with clients, plant personnel, management, and vendors to ensure successful completion of assigned projects. Ensures quality of product or service delivered in a timely manner, and collaborates on project budget and project risk factors. Assists in overseeing monthly program status updates.

Requirements/Minimum Qualifications
- B.S. in mechanical engineering from an ABET accredited institution
- Demonstrated CAD experience is required
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, and PowerPoint)
Preferred Qualifications
- Internships or Co-op work experience within a large-scale industrial setting is preferred, but not mandatory
- Strong preference given to candidates with prior experience in mechanical design and ‘hands-on’ experience with mechanical equipment
Work Environment & Conditions
This position involves work in an office, laboratory and field-testing environment, and could require the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) including:
