Elementary Special Education (Learning Support) Teacher position available at George Wolf Elementary. Permanent contracted position effective for the start of the 2023-2024 school year.


TITLE: Special Education Teacher
CATEGORY: Professional Staff
REPORTS TO: Building Principal and Director of Special Education

JOB SUMMARY: Provide special educational setting and programs to enable students with disabilities to function successfully in the least restrictive environment

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Possesses Bachelor's degree
  • Possesses valid Pennsylvania teaching certificate and Highly Qualified status in appropriate area
  • Assures compliance with Employment Eligibility through Criminal History Records, Pre-Employment Drug Testing and Physical Examination/TB Test Standard
  • Possesses proficiency in the English language, with strong oral and written communication skills
  • Possesses ability to deal courteously and tactfully with school personnel and the public
  • Possesses ability to operate a computer, all software, and other office equipment as assigned
  • Possesses ability to maintain high level of confidentiality
  • Establishes and maintains cooperative and effective working relationships with others
  • Possesses valid driver’s license if position requires travel around district
  • KNOWLEDGE OF:
    • Current trends and research concerning the growth and development of students with disabilities
    • Data analysis, targeting instruction, and intervention services
    • Remediation strategies and behavior management techniques
    • Instructional terminology, program philosophies, concepts, materials, methods and procedures
    • Applicable laws, codes, regulations, policies and procedures

PRIMARY JOB FUNCTIONS:
The position holder must be able to perform the essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodation. It is the responsibility of the employee to inform the District of any and all reasonable accommodations that will be required.
  • Provides planned learning experiences in order to motivate pupils and best utilize the available time for instruction; identifies and adjusts instructional objectives in terms of student need using grade level standards and assessments
  • Develops lesson plans and instructional materials in accordance with site and organizational policy to provide individualized and small group, as well as whole group, instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each pupil; develops specific plans for substitutes as necessary
  • Creates lesson plans that comply with PA Core Standards and/or PA Academic Standards
  • Analyzes school and individualized student data
  • Establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom; supports and assists in maintaining district discipline policy and the site discipline plan; develops self-discipline responsibility and leadership skills in the students
  • Identifies pupil needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing and helping pupils manage health, emotional, social, and learning problems
  • Creates a classroom environment which is conducive for learning through functional and attractive displays, bulletin boards, and interest centers and which includes models of high standards and expectations for student work
  • Conducts instruction based on the written and Board approved curriculum
  • Adheres to the Pennsylvania Professional Standards and Practices Commission Code of Conduct
  • Teaches basic perceptual and academic skills on the level of the pupil's emotional, physical and intellectual needs as determined by the individualized education plan (IEP) team; participates in the preparation of the IEP and team meetings; implements written instructional plans for students
  • Develops student competencies that promote personal hygiene, social skills, physical development, safety skills, and vocational awareness, as needed by each individual student
  • Administers multiple-measure assessment tests in accordance with the testing program and IEP goals
  • Promotes School-Wide Positive Behavior Support (SWPBS)
  • Maintains appropriate records and prepares progress reports; communicates with parents on the individual pupil’s progress
  • Serves as a member of the multi-disciplinary team for re-evaluation as assigned
  • Confers with parents and professional staff members on each student's progress
  • Arranges with school administrators and other IEP team members for integration of pupils into regular classes for instruction in areas where students can meet success, collaborates with regular education teacher on the monitoring of student’s progress in a regular classroom
  • Maintains regular and timely attendance

SECONDARY JOB FUNCTIONS:
  • Maintains professional competence through staff development activities and/or self-selected professional growth activities
  • Administers to the health needs of students, as needed
  • Supervises pupils in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned working day
  • Participates in meetings, conferences and in-services as assigned
  • Performs related duties as assigned
