Job description

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Works under the direction of the Assistant Director Community Outreach and Special Projects to assist with community outreach and fund-raising efforts for the Library, Foundation for the Library, and the Friends of the Library; which includes researching grant opportunities, direct mail efforts, special events, cause related marketing and sponsorships for a variety of Library programs. Assists in the planning, preparation, execution, and reporting of grants and Library programs, as assigned. Develops and executes direct mail campaigns including: composing solicitation letters and proposals, compiling and updating mailing lists, and overseeing the mailing process. Maintains e-mail lists for marketing and development needs. Solicits funds from potential contributors, as needed. Prepares information packets for prospective donors. Records and transmits donations to correct locations. Researches local and national foundations and prospective donors. Maintains donor and prospect data, as assigned. Promotes the Library system by conducting speeches as needed. Ensures compliance with federal, state and local requirements concerning gifts and solicitations.

  • Performs additional functions (essential or otherwise) which may be assigned.


TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Must be able to communicate clearly both verbally and in writing. Requires the ability to operate general office equipment such as a computer and telephone.

TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS: Works primarily in a Library environment. Requires frequent travel within Shelby County. Must be able to work flexible work hours. Must be able to work nights and weekends as needed.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A Bachelor's degree in Business and Public Administration, Marketing or a closely related field and one (1) year experience in community development/outreach or fund-raising; or any combination of experience and training which enable one to perform the essential job functions. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and experience with fund-raising software are preferred.
