Job Title: Machinist Reports to: Machine Shop Foreman

Location Mt. Vernon, IL Salary: DOE

SUMMARY: Responsible to program, set up and operate a variety of cnc lathes and

cnc mills to produce precision parts. Also may fabricate replacement and new parts

for industrial machinery.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES

1. Program CNC Machines using Mastercam and/or Conversational languages

1) 2. Calculate dimensions and tolerances using knowledge of mathematics and

instruments such as micrometers and vernier calipers.

3. Machine parts to specifications using machine tools such as lathes, milling

machines, shapers, or grinders.

4. Measure, examine, and test completed units in order to detect defects and ensure

conformance to specifications, using precision instruments such as micrometers.

5. Set up, adjust, and operate all of the basic machine tools and many specialized or

advanced variation tools in order to perform precision machining operations.

6. Align and secure holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and

materials onto machines.

7. Monitor the feed and speed of machines during the machining process.

8. Study sample parts, blueprints, drawings, and engineering information in order to

determine methods and sequences of operations needed to fabricate products, and

determine product dimensions and tolerances.

9. Select the appropriate tools, machines, and materials to be used in preparation of

machinery work.

10. Lay out, measure, and mark metal stock in order to display placement of cuts.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS

1. Basic reading, writing, and some advanced arithmetic skills required. This is

normally acquired through a high school diploma or equivalent.

2. Advanced skills required in one or more of the following areas: mechanical,

hydraulic & pneumatic systems, and CNC programming.

3. Experience using one or more of the following tools: CNC lathe, CNC mill,

keysetter, drill press, and vertical/horizontal cut off saw.

4. Ability to read and interpret blueprints and schematics.

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL DEMANDS

5. Manual dexterity required for operating machinery and computers.

6. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds required.

7. Ability to stand for up to five consecutive hours at a time.

8. Periodic bending, pushing, stretching and reaching.

9. Not afraid to get dirty

10. Ability to focus and create accurate programs by analyzing blueprints

11. Ability to wear safety glasses, safety-toed boots, hearing protection at all

times while working in the shop.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

1. CERTIFICATE IN ADVANCED MACHINING

2. 1 YEAR EXPERIENCE WITH PROGRAMMING, SETUP AND OPERATING CNC MILLS AND/OR CNC

LATHES
