Overview:
The Public Facilities Department (PFD) provides professional project management services for design and construction projects at City-owned buildings throughout Boston. We work in conjunction with, and on behalf of user agencies, by managing renovation or new construction projects at buildings where City services are delivered. PFD manages a range of projects valued between $1M - $125M and typically handles an overall caseload between 80-100 projects valued at more than $500M annually.

This is a provisional appointment.

Brief Job Description (essential functions of the job):

Under the direct supervision of the Asst. Director of Operations and a Project Manager, the Clerk II is responsible for on-site inspections of construction projects, including the largest and most complicated projects and the Renew Boston Trust projects, to ensure contractor compliance with the contract documents.

Responsibilities:
  • Maintains daily logs of construction progress, site visitors, problems and resolutions; keeping the PM apprised of progress and problems; inspecting materials used by contractor.
  • Attendins job coordination meetings, participating in the written review of documents prior to bid, providing reports from the field regarding how to improve design and materials standards and construction specification.
  • Assists PMs in reviewing change order pricing and quantities, assisting Clerks as requested.
  • Performs other related duties as required by the position.
  • Performs related work as required.
Minimum Entrance Qualifications:
  • At least 5 (five) years experience in building construction as an owners' representative, Clerk of the Works or construction superintendent required.
  • Knowledge of construction practices related to renewable energy/energy efficiency preferred.
  • Experience with projects over $2,000,000 preferred.
  • Knowledge of Mass. Building Codes, construction regulations & statues regarding generally accepted construction and trade practices preferred.
  • Ability to read plans, specifications, contract requirements and ability to review and track construction schedules preferred.
  • Familiarity with City and Mass. Public bidding, advertising, MWBE and BRJP requirements preferred.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills preferred.
  • Appropriated educational substitutions may be made.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on detail as required by the job.
