Church History Library Consultants work collaboratively as part of the Research Consultation team to assist patrons in developing research strategies and navigating Church History Library collections and resources on-site and remotely. They provide this assistance both via brief interactions and through on-going relationships with patrons working on long-term projects. Patrons include Church History Department staff, other Church departments, scholars, family history researchers, and the public. This position will work closely with researchers to understand their research goals, conduct thorough investigations, and provide expert guidance and recommendations. Consultants also help to develop online self-help tools and resources such as research guides.


  • Collaborate with clients to understand their research objectives, provide guidance on research strategies, and answer questions about the research process.
  • Develop and contribute to multiple areas of subject matter expertise. Serve as the team’s family history subject matter expert.
  • Develop an in-depth knowledge of Church History Library collections and their usefulness to family history researchers and other patrons.
  • Assist the Consultation Team in answering reference questions and building a knowledge base by using digital tools.
  • Understand and follow Church and Church History Library policies and procedures.
  • Adhere to professional standards in the library, archival, and intellectual property disciplines.
  • Contribute to a collegial and professional atmosphere that incorporates the highest model of behavior and cooperation, promoting teamwork and group purposes.
  • Assist on-site patrons in the Reading Room and Discovery Area.
  • Network and build long-term working relationships with patrons, employees, and others.
  • Participate in complex reference and research projects as assigned.
  • Participate as a member of various committees, working groups, and project teams in the Church History Department demonstrating refined project management and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Work occasional shifts on Saturdays and evenings.

  • Bachelor's degree with at least 5 years of experience required. Preference is given to applicants with a Master of Library Science or other related fields of study (public history, history, family history, museum studies, etc.).
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a broad range of staff, departments, missionaries, and the public
  • Well-developed understanding of Latter-day Saint Church history and Church history resources
  • Strong proficiency in genealogical research methods, techniques, and tools, including online databases, archives, libraries, and other resources
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to communicate complex research findings to clients in a clear and understandable manner
  • Professionalism, integrity, and the ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with discretion
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills
  • Self-motivated, detailed, and results-oriented with team and/or project leadership experience
  • Knowledge of electronic library and archival systems and tools
  • The ability to speak, read, and write in one or more languages other than English is desirable
  • Member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and worthy to hold a temple recommend
