Position Summary:
The lifeguard maintains safe swimming conditions and a positive pool environment. Directly supervises swimmers and participants at the pool facilities. Explains and enforces safety rules, responds to inquiries, and administers first aid and CPR. Seasonal temporary position.
This position does not have direct reports.

Essential Functions:
Health, Safety & Security

• Supervise swimming activities at the pool and making sure that safety procedures, guidelines and policies are followed
• Explain and enforces all pool rules and regulations strictly, consistently, and courteously
• Remain rescue ready at all times. Recognizes and responds quickly and effectively in emergencies
• Administers and coordinates first aid in the event of injury, rescues swimmers in distress or danger of drowning, and administers CPR and/or artificial respiration, if necessary.
• Proactively warns, and explains to swimmers improper activities
• Evaluates conditions and weather for participants safety
• Inspects pool facilities, equipment, and water to ensure that they are safe and usable.

• Actively interacts with residents, develops and maintains constructive relationships, and serves as a positive role model
• Encourages and praises children demonstration of appropriate behaviors and use of skills through the uses of describing appropriate skills or behaviors to children, providing rationales for behaviors, and recognition or rewards to aid in building self-confidence
• Oversees and/or participates in various recreational programs and activities with children to stimulate interest in and cooperation with various social and educational programs
• Applies crisis intervention with children to include primary preventative measures before a child needs further disciplinary action, (i.e., supervision, change of placement)

Requirements

Education/Experience/Knowledge/Understanding

• High school Diploma/GED
• Current Lifeguard Certification (ARC, YMCA or Ellis & Associates)
• Current First Aid/CPR certification (or willingness to obtain)
• Must be at least 21 years of age
• Possess a valid unrestricted driver license
• Clear fingerprint background screening through the Department of Justice, FBI and Child Abuse Index
• Strong verbal, written, and listening communication skills to include communicating clearly, effectively, tactfully, and patiently to a diverse population
• Strong interpersonal skills and demeanor with the ability to build rapport and garner trust with others

Abilities Ability to perform as wide variety of swimming skills; possess sufficient strength, agility, hearing, and vision to perform the duties of a lifeguard

• Thoroughly understand the procedures for reporting accidents and know procedures for when and how to call for help to handle stressful or sensitive situations with tact and diplomacy;
• Ability to effectively engage with children from various backgrounds and circumstances
• Ability to maintain professional behavior in high pressure situations
• Ability to solve problems by applying basic analytical skills to include collating and reporting information; identifying trends and exceptions; investigating to define problems more accurately; sorting information in order of importance; identifying relationships and linkages between components; identifying variable potential causes and effects; soliciting guidance to define criteria and assign values of importance and urgency; and escalating issues of an exceptional nature
• Ability to work collaborative as part of a team

*Physical Demands* Ability to react to emergency situations by quick movements, strenuous activity, and on occasionassist or lift persons in distress of varying weights.

Ability to remain alert to dangerous situations while sitting, standing or walking for variouslengths of time Ability to frequently stand, swim, see, hear, speak, and be physically flexible; occasionally sits walk, stoop, lift up to 50 lbs., carry, run and drive; and at times may bend, climb, squat, kneel, push/pull

• Ability to spend 95% of time outdoors, 5% indoors, withstand moderate noise levels including voice levels 90% of the time, extreme heat up to 111 degrees; wind, rain cold weather; to drive an automobile; occasionally work alone; work with others 85% of the time
• Employees may be exposed to children who may ask inappropriate personal questions, display socially unacceptable personal behaviors, insult your physical appearance, age, sex, and race, use profanity, sexually explicit phrases, exhibit defiance, dishonesty, threats, accusations, and theft, assaultive behaviors and self-destructive behaviors.

Job Types: Full-time, Part-time

Pay: $18.50 per hour

Schedule:

• 4 hour shift
• Monday to Friday
