Under the supervision of a Clinical Research Supervisor or Principal Investigators (PI), the incumbent will perform entry-level duties related to the support and coordination of clinical studies and may receive training and development to prepare and advance for journey-level work at the next level within the series.

This position is responsible for supporting clinical research and research activity coordination for Pediatric Ophthalmology providers. Activities include (but are not limited to): independently drafting institutional research board submissions, modifications, and other regulatory tasks, data management, assistance with academic presentations, manuscript preparation, and literature review.

The candidate will assume responsibility for communications with the institutional review board on behalf of the supervising investigators, and communicating with local, national, and international research collaborators as well as managing the research data.

May be responsible for the coordination of one or more single or multi-site, active, or follow-up clinical trials; help prepare protocols for study initiation; help design flow sheets, data forms, and source documents; gather and interpret medical, surgical, and laboratory data regarding clinical trial subjects; may apply understanding of inclusion/exclusion eligibility criteria for protocols; help recruit, enroll, register, schedule and retain study subjects; record protocol specific treatments and assure collection and shipment of samples; assist research personnel to keep patients on study schedules; complete study forms to submit to sponsors and/or appropriate agencies; collect, enter and clean data into study databases, maintaining data quality; assist with data analysis; assist with preparation of reports and tables; attend team meetings; and perform other duties as assigned.

Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% - 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Department Description

The UCSF Department of Ophthalmology is one of the leading ophthalmology departments in clinical care, training, and research nationwide.

The Department of Ophthalmology is one of the largest recipients of federal grant funds among peer departments. We are ranked 1st in National Eye Institute Funding and 2nd in overall National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding in the country. Additionally, we have been the #1 recipient of the Research to Prevent Blindness funding nationwide with nearly $1.2 million granted in a single year. Overall, the Department has a wide-ranging portfolio of 60 active research grants.

UCSF’s renowned eye care services have a new state-of-the-art home. In November 2020, the Wayne and Gladys Valley Center for Vision opened its doors. Located at UCSF's Mission Bay Campus, the center houses the Vision Clinics, where many of UCSF's eye care programs relocated, as well as research and teaching facilities. Ophthalmology conducts its patient care, teaching, research, and public service activities currently at multiple UCSF campuses: Parnassus, Mt. Zion, Veteran’s Administration Medical Center (VAMC), San Francisco General (SFG), East Bay and Benioff Children’s Hospital at Mission Bay and in Oakland.

The department sponsors numerous invited speakers, research seminars, journal clubs, as well as a postdoctoral training program focused on mentorship, networking, and recognition. The UCSF Department of Ophthalmology consists of approximately 300 FTE’s (including UCSF Health employees) including faculty, basic scientists, postdoctoral scholars, graduate students, residents, fellows, clinical, research, and administrative staff.

Required Qualifications

  • HS graduation and sufficient experience and demonstrated skills to successfully perform the assigned duties and responsibilities or equivalent training/experience
  • Excellent verbal and written communications and presentation skills; excellent organizational skills; and excellent interpersonal skills to work effectively in a diverse team
  • Attention to detail
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Windows
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, team-based environment; project management and coordination skills; ability to prioritize tasks and meet multiple deadlines on concurrent projects
  • Ability to establish cooperative working relationships with patients, co-workers, & physicians

Preferred Qualifications

  • One year of experience with histology, molecular biology, biochemistry and/or related field
  • One year of excellent record-keeping, and data management with meticulous attention to detail
  • One year of recent, direct work experience utilizing the laboratory and clinical trials techniques and methods as required by the position (e.g., IRB submissions, clinical trial management, AOSLO image analysis)
  • Experience with manuscript preparation, medical terminology
  • Clinical Trials Design and Management certification or equivalent extended education
  • Certification by the Society of Clinical Research Associates or the Association of Clinical Research Professionals
  • BA/BS in Human Biology, Biology, Microbiology, or Physiological Science with coursework in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, and/or Neuroscience
  • Significant project and clinical trial management experience or progressively responsible experience in a related position including regulatory and compliance responsibilities
  • Experience using database software, such as MS Access or Filemaker Pro
