Mission or Goal of Unit:

The Department of Finance, Insurance and Real Estate (FIRE) in the School of Business at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) offers undergraduate majors in Finance, Real Estate, Finance with a concentration in Risk Management and Insurance, Financial Technology with a concentration in Actuarial Science, and Financial Technology with a concentration in Financial Engineering. It also offers minors in actuarial science, real estate, and risk management and insurance. The Department offers a Master of Science concentration in Finance, a Master of Science concentration in Real Estate, a Graduate Certificate in Real Estate, and a Master of Decision Analytics concentration in Financial Analytics. Additionally, FIRE faculty teach in the MBA, Executive MBA, and online MBA programs. They also have opportunities to be involved in the Ph.D. in Business. The Department has 13 full-time faculty who are active researchers and engaged teachers. In addition, it has two full-time directors who run the Kornblau Real Estate program, the Risk Management and Insurance Program, and the Virginia Credit Union Financial Success Center.

The department is committed to the advancement of high-quality research in line with the University’s Carnegie classification as R1: Doctoral University - Very High Research Activity. FIRE faculty members have published in a wide range of leading journals including the Journal of Finance, the Journal of Financial Economics, The Review of Financial Studies, Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis, Journal of Banking and Finance, Journal of Risk and Insurance, Financial Management, Journal of Money, Credit and Banking, Journal of International Money and Finance, Journal of Corporate Finance, Journal of Empirical Finance, Journal of Real Estate Finance and Economics, and Real Estate Economics. The department supports WRDS platform and databases including Eventus, Datastream Pro, Mergers & Acquisitions (Refinitiv), New Issues (Refinitiv), -Institutional (13F) Holdings (Refinitiv), CRSP, Compustat, Bloomberg, SNL, Audit Analytics, MSCI GMI Ratings, and MSCI ESG KLD.

Chief Purpose of this position:

The FIRE Department at Virginia Commonwealth University, in Richmond, Virginia, invites applicants for a full-time tenure-track/tenured faculty position at any rank (Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor) to start in August 2023. The ideal candidate will have a demonstrated record or the potential for high-quality scholarly research and excellent teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels in risk management and insurance, financial technology, financial engineering, blockchain, real estate or corporate social responsibility.

The successful candidate must conduct scholarly research where the output of such research is published in high-caliber peer-reviewed journals, advise students, and provide service to the department, school, university, and academic community. For tenured positions, applicants must have an established national research reputation and be committed to scholarly research and teaching of the highest quality.

Position Responsibilities:

We are open to candidates at any rank with an interest in Fin Tech, blockchain, corporate social responsibility, real estate, insurance and risk management. The position offers a competitive salary and an attractive benefits package.

Required Qualifications:

Applicants must possess or be a candidate for a PhD in a discipline related to the department’s programs. ABD candidates are expected to successfully defend their dissertation by the official start date. Applicants must have demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment, or a commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU.

Preferred Qualifications:

An established research agenda, clear potential for external funding, and potential for scholarship or creative expression to complement and expand existing expertise in the department.
