The Area Safety Manager is responsible for providing leadership, oversight, and direction in safety and health across several materials and construction operations located within the eastern Pennsylvania market areas of Lancaster, Allentown, and Scranton. This position reports to the Vice President of Corporate Safety and is located at either the Lancaster or Allentown Area offices.

Area Safety Manager - What Will You Do?

  • Works closely and collaborates with regional, area and site management to improve safety systems, reduce risks, and help assure effective and consistent implementation of company safety processes and best practices.
  • Assists with developing and updating Company safety procedures and policies.
  • Participates with and advises company Behavioral-Based Safety Teams and other project teams as necessary.
  • Leads the incident investigation process within responsible market areas. Assists with developing incident reports, root cause analysis, corrective action plans, and incident communications.
  • Performs safety and health trend analysis and develops prioritized improvement strategies designed to eliminate or minimize incident trends and risks within responsible market areas.
  • Provides support with regulatory inspections from MSHA and OSHA.
  • Completes behavioral-based and compliance-based safety observations / audits of sites and projects.
  • Actively monitors and engages with employees to promote safe work behaviors and eliminate at-risk performance.
  • Manages all aspects of safety training within responsible market areas, including but not limited to determining training needs, coordinating training classes, developing lesson plans and materials, conducting training sessions, teaching safety courses, and maintaining training records.
  • Manages third-party safety and health services, such as hearing tests, occupational health sampling, and specialized training.
  • Conducts occupational health sampling. Manages medical surveillance as needed.
  • Maintains complete and accurate regulatory and departmental safety and health records.

Requirements - Who Are We Looking For?

  • Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety, Occupational Health Management/Sciences, or similar field.
  • 5 years or more of safety experience preferably within the mining and /or construction industries.
  • CSP, CIH, and/or CMSP preferred.
  • Current MSHA Part 46/48 qualification preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license and compliant with NESL Driving Standards.
  • Must be able to respond to emergencies after scheduled work hours and during weekends.
  • Must be able to travel to multiple sites and projects throughout the assigned area of coverage. 80% travel is typical for this position. Must be able to travel overnight.
  • Must be able to work nights when necessary to support nighttime operations.
  • Advanced computer skills required (MS Office).
  • Applied knowledge of MSHA and OSHA regulations and national safety standards.
