The Victim/Witness Coordinator serves as a liaison between the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office and members of the community who are, or have been, a victim of a crime. This position assists victims in understanding the criminal justice system, and provides advocacy, support, information, and guidance to primary and secondary victims of crime. The Victim/Witness Coordinator also works with, trains, and acts as the primary caregiver for the Investigations Division therapy dog during and after work hours. This position also maintains statistical data regarding services provided to the community. This position works with the public, and may be exposed to potentially hostile or emotionally charged individuals. Additionally, the position incumbent is regularly exposed to sensitive and disturbing content related to criminal activity, including details about serious injuries and crimes.

Contact with Victims and Detectives
Work with detectives to receive referrals for victims of crime, and initiate contact with them
Conduct in-person and phone interviews with victims and witnesses, and sit in on interviews with detectives as needed
Work with deputies and detectives to coordinate efforts in order to understand and provide services needed to victims
Provide information and referrals to community resources and assists victims in contacting and utilizing those services
Provide victims with information and understanding of their rights as victims of a crime
Assist victims with stabilization of their lives following victimization
Assist victims with transportation as needed to enable them to participate in the criminal justice system
Help victims understand their role in the criminal justice system
Travel to victims’ residences to assist with advocacy efforts
Interact with internal and external partners to help facilitate assistance, and update resource lists

Tracking, Recordkeeping, and other Administrative duties
Identify and track all victim-related case information, and manage sensitive information in a confidential manner
Document attempts to contact and established contact with victims, and maintain detailed statistics of services provided to them using spreadsheets and records management systems
Prepare regular reports in accordance with grant requirements with service information, including required victim demographic information
Train and care for the therapy canine assigned to the Investigations division

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in Social Work or a related field. Education may be substituted for experience, with one year of experience for one year of education. One year of experience with Microsoft Suite or similar systems. Per Sedgwick County Policy, this is a driving level position that requires a valid Kansas driver’s license without restrictions and current proof of automobile insurance.

Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work. Two years of experience in a Human Services or Law Enforcement related field.
