Specific Duties Include:
- Ability to evaluate materials and effectively instruct the sixth-grade curriculum;
- Understand national and state standards;
- Be competent in planning, developing, and monitoring instructional lessons;
- Evaluate student performance accurately;
- Be able to communicate expectations and achievement benchmarks clearly to both students and parents;
- Be experienced in implementing a variety of teaching and learning strategies to teach mainstream content to bright students who have learning disabilities, processing weaknesses, or difficulty regulating attention;
- Help all students develop the reading, writing, listening, and organizational skills needed for academic progress;
- Skillfully apply behavior management and social/emotional strategies in the classroom;
- Be competent with technology, using various software programs for academic skills practice and assignment production.
Required Skills:
- Working knowledge of and experience in teaching sixth-grade curriculum, especially skills in the areas of reading and written expression.
- Passion for and familiarity with the development and learning needs of an upper elementary student.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills demonstrating competence and diplomacy that are essential to building strong partnerships with students, parents, and peers.
- Solid understanding of brain research and best practices in education as well as differentiated instructional techniques to support students with complex learning profiles.
- Strong organizational and classroom management skills.
- Proficiency with a range of technologies and the ability to use them in the teaching of English.
- Strong desire to continue learning by taking courses and attending workshops/conferences.
- Ability and willingness to contribute to the Academy through coaching or other co-curricular activities.
- Possess an engaging teaching style and promote an inclusive learning environment in the classroom.
Minimum Qualifications:
- B.A. degree in Learning Disabilities, Reading, Special Education, or Early Childhood Education (with heavy coursework in learning disabilities); Master’s degree preferred
- Certification (Reading, Special Education, or Mild Learning Disabilities)
- A minimum of three years experience teaching students with diagnosed learning differences
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Knowledge of instructional methods and best practices for students with diagnosed learning differences
- Ability to work with students, teachers, and parents toward student achievement
The Teacher, Lower School Transition 6th Grade is an exempt, salaried, ten-month position. Salary is commensurate with education and experience. The benefits are substantial.
