ANNOUNCEMENT OF POSITION VACANCY


SUMMARY: currently searching for one Student Research Assistant to work in the laboratory of Dr. David Still in the Department of Plant Sciences. The student assistant will work with lab technicians, postdocs and research scientists to assist with well-established activities depending on the research objectives of existing grants.


ABOUT US: As the largest employer of students on the Cal Poly Pomona campus, the Foundation offers valuable work experience and hands-on training to approximately 1,500 Cal Poly Pomona students each year. The Foundation offers positions in various fields; whether it is in the area of technology, science, retail, culinary arts, hospitality1500 management, leadership or research grants, these student employees participate in Cal Poly Pomona's learn-by-doing philosophy and acquire practical skills in their designated field of study.


The Foundation also contributes operating support to nearly 1,100 Foundation and scholarship programs every year, including Bronco Athletics and the Norman J. Priest Scholarship. In addition, the Foundation administers grants and contracts, contributes to campus security, and supports several university publications. The Foundation contributes over $1 million annually to Cal Poly Pomona.


SOME OF THE THINGS THAT YOU WILL GET TO DO (this is just a small sampling of work variety):

  • Assist with our research in lettuce plant breeding to improve water and nitrogen use efficiency.
  • Set up and assist with laboratory experiments and keep and maintain laboratory notebooks
  • Set up and assist with field plot layout, plant harvests, seed harvests and seed cleaning.
  • Maintain plants in greenhouse including watering, fertilizing and disease/insect scouting.
  • Assist in collection and analyses of phenotypic data from plants in mapping populations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Currently enrolled in Spring 2023 semester; although the work is in a plant genetics laboratory, no previous experience with plants is required. Above all, critical thinking skills and eagerness to learn are essential. Ability to focus and pay attention to detail is absolutely required. The incumbent must work effectively with team members and other off-campus research groups.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Grade point average over 3.2 preferred
  • Those with computer programming (e.g., Python, Pearl), Excel skills, R or SAS statistical analyses skills, or database knowledge are encouraged to apply
