The Sr. Asset Manager reports to the Recycling Director. The Sr. Asset Manager is responsible for ensuring that all efforts are compliant with the Company’s Health, Safety and Environmental regulations. The incumbent ensures cost effective, planned, and efficient operations of all regional facility equipment and assets (fixed & stationary). Incumbent is solely responsible for all maintenance and maintenance personnel within the assigned region. This position requires collaborative communication and partnership with Management, Purchasing & Procurement (as it relates to the timely receipt of equipment parts and consumables), and third-party contractors, vendors/suppliers, engineering firms, equipment manufacturers. The Sr. Asset Manager will follow best practices benchmarks as well oversee and ensure success as it relates to the comprehensive preventative maintenance program with a focus on continuous improvement. Exceptional project management skills will be necessary for the execution of large maintenance initiatives and/or special projects.

This position operates within flexible parameters and is responsible for the oversight of on-site maintenance managers, all regional maintenance projects, and the preventative maintenance program. The primary goal of this position is to achieve excellence in all facets of the maintenance function. Providing the highest quality product safely, effectively, and efficiently decreases accidents and errors and increases profits.

Essential Functions:

  • Environmental and Health & Safety (H&S)
    • Ensures all Metals Recycling Business Safety and Environmental standards are strictly adhered to.
    • Suggests and submits recommendations for improving safety or environmental conditions.
    • Conducts or arranges for worker training in safety, repair, and maintenance techniques, operational procedures, environmental awareness, or equipment use.
    • Works with Regional Safety Engineer(s) and dispatchers to develop a standard for ensuring that all our facilities are full compliance with the state and federal laws.
  • Operational Performance & Best Management Practices
    • This position will challenge conventional thinking to obtain the most efficient solutions to issues that arise as well as utilize best practices, benchmarks, and metrics to improve the organization.
    • Coordinates processes to ensure internal & external customer satisfaction.
    • Designs, assesses, implements, communicates, and monitors organization’s internal controls in accordance with regulations and laws.
    • Attends weekly and monthly operations meetings.
    • Maintains policies and procedures to ensure efficient operations and adequate internal controls, which will continuously be reviewed and updated.
    • Establishes cross-regional communication and interactions with MRB Regional Maintenance Managers; compares and discusses maintenance issues that ensure best practice standards are adhered to across the business unit, shares training practices for maintenance personnel and technicians on current technology and associated applications.
    • Researches and develops a broad vendor base; supervises and assists outside contractors; maintains accurate records about project costs and negotiates with contractors to resolve cost overruns; prepares time and material estimates and shares with various department staff as needed. Researches and recommends new and used equipment for purchase in collaboration with the regional and national purchasing groups.
    • Establishes routine facility visits: allows time to periodically observe and walk through regional facilities; observes and identifies condition of equipment and work assignments; assesses repairs; supervises and monitors work quality; manages direct reports in accordance with company policies and procedures; and optimizes performance.
    • Awareness of and strategic response to external influences, such as DOT and OSHA legislation is vital to success in this role.
    • Ensures policies and practices are understood and practiced.
    • Performs other special projects, which may also require project management acumen.
  • Equipment & Maintenance
    • Develops, implements, and evaluates preventative maintenance programs, policies, and procedures.
    • Examines objects, systems, or facilities, and analyzes information to determine needed installations, services, or repairs.
    • Compiles operational and personnel records, such as time and production records, inventory data, repair and maintenance statistics, and test results via the use of Microsoft Office and Oracle ERP applications.
  • Budgeting & Forecasting
    • Monitors, negotiates, and adjusts all contracts, leases, expenses, or agreements associated with the maintenance operations function.
    • Monitors regional maintenance spending to ensure that expenses are consistent with approved budgets.
    • Reviews the Maintenance budget with the Controller monthly at a minimum. Provides a proposal for the annual Maintenance budget for review and approval of key area and Corporate staff.
  • Administrative Management
    • Monitors and maintains exempt and hourly staff at cost effective and competitive levels.
    • Monitors supervisory practices for self and his/her direct reports to ensure compliance with HR policies and union contracts.
    • Review’s performance of direct reports.
    • Interviews prospective management and/or production employees.
    • Works with Human Resources personnel to prepare job descriptions.

Internal Control Responsibilities:

Supports the Company’s Internal Control process which includes understanding, communicating, and complying with defined internal controls as well as suggesting and making modifications to the policies, procedures, and controls to better relate to the business. Communicates upward problems in operations, noncompliance with the code of conduct, or other policy violations or illegal actions.

Supervisory Responsibility:

This position may or may not supervisor maintenance leadership and individual contributor staff.

Internal contact with the Recycling Operations Director, Regional General Manager, Regional Purchasing Manager, Regional Project Manager, General Managers, Plant Managers, Shredder Manager(s), Joint Product Operations Manager(s), Terminal Operations Manager(s), Maintenance Manager(s), Day & Night Shift Supervisor(s), Warehouse Supervisor(s), Regional Safety Engineer(s), Regional Environmental Manager, and facility and regional Commercial Teams.

External contacts include suppliers, outside contractors and equipment manufacturers.

Job Conditions:

Outdoor industrial maintenance environment involving heavy equipment and inclement weather working conditions is standard. Some travel is involved to inspect off-site work projects; off-site work involves meeting with employees and current or potential customers in person and visiting other Schnitzer locations. Work pressure can be substantial during peak times requiring considerable adaptability; disturbance of workflow and/ or constant interruptions, changing schedules, and often extremely short time deadlines significantly increases job pressures. Overtime is common depending on how much time is required to finish a job. Handling multiple issues regarding scheduling, safety, and maintenance increases pressure.

Physical Activities Required to Perform Essential Functions:

Significant time is spent outdoors overseeing and planning equipment projects. Subject to noise, dust, weather, and heavy machinery. Able to: lift and carry 25 pounds, and up to 50 pounds occasionally; walk or stand for long periods of time; negotiate over uneven surfaces; climb, bend, crouch or crawl to inspect equipment and related structures as necessary; ability to communicate in a professional manner to all levels of employees, both in writing and orally. Visual acuity for operating a computer, reading complex documents, blueprints, constructions diagrams, and other technical materials. Must be able operate a motor vehicle.

Qualifications:

Minimum 7-10 years’ experience in a related industrial environment. College courses in business or management helpful. This position requires possession of a valid driver’s license and the ability to drive an automobile.

Project management skills and experience. Knowledge of fabrication; tools, maintenance of heavy equipment/parts, and repair; computer competency; attention to detail and accuracy; excellent math, organizational, and management skills; tact and ability to communicate on a professional level to employees of all levels from staff to senior management, both orally and in writing. Ability to obtain and evaluate data about equipment and know how to use that information; work under heavy pressure; apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to define problems, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions in controlled situations.
