Job description

Zeeland Public Schools has an opening for a Special Education Teacher - Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The Special Education Teacher - Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is responsible for planning and delivering specially designed instruction for students with autism spectrum disorder impairment. Instruction will focus on academic and behavioral skills, life skills, and communication and engagement. The ASD teacher will serve as the case manager for students, while working flexibly and collaboratively with colleagues to create appropriate learning opportunities for each student.

Responsibilities:

  • Plan and deliver specialized instruction in academic core content areas and functional life skills.
  • Differentiate instruction to meet the needs of individual students.
  • Incorporate visuals for all aspects of students' schedules and communication.
  • Collaborate with general education teachers regarding inclusion opportunities for students.
  • Document and share student progress on goals and objectives, accommodations, and service time.
  • Collaborate with all service providers, general education teachers, and other staff in the development of annual Individual Education Programs (IEPs) and re-evaluations.
  • Participate in the development, implementation, and evaluation of behavior support plans.
  • Engage in professional consultation activities with the ASD Teacher Consultant from Ottawa area Intermediate School District (OAISD).
  • Lead and support classroom paraprofessionals.
  • Support use of augmented communication devices as appropriate.
  • Comply with timelines, laws, and regulations as it relates to district, state, and federal policies and procedures.
  • Maintain consistent and timely contact with parents.
  • Log and maintain monthly Medicaid reports.
  • Other duties as assigned by building administration or Assistant Superintendent of Special Education.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Special Education with endorsement in Autism Spectrum Disorder (SV) or commitment to obtain.
  • Knowledgeable in Essential Elements with Michigan Range of Complexity and Common Core State Standards.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, colleagues, parents and community members.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely (oral and written).
  • Ability to take initiative yet work as a team-player.
  • Ability to work with flexibility and adaptability.
  • Certification in CPI.
