Job Description


The Student Support Specialist is responsible for leading efforts in supporting Academic Support and Mentoring programming. This position will support the following programs: UMKC’s Summer Bridge Scholars, First Gen Roo Scholars, Supplemental Instruction, UMKC Tutoring, and Writing Studio and will serve as a team member within Academic Support and Mentoring.

Duties & Expectations:

  • Provide individual and group supervision to assigned student employees
  • Assist in developing and implementing initial training and ongoing professional development for student employees
  • Implement a project management system for assigned student employees to ensure delegation of tasks it relates to event planning, social media, and other large departmental projects
  • Assist with coordinating and implementing logistics associated with preparation, setup/teardown for events and detailed day of event information regarding staffing, event timelines, parking, needed materials, etc.
    • ASM events (i.e. Finals Rooview, Roo Welcome Events, First Gen Roo Welcome Week, National First Generation College Student Celebration, Graduation events, etc.)
    • UMKC events (i.e. Orientation, Discover UMKC, Family and New Student Programming, etc.)
  • Assist with planning and implementing First Gen Roo Fall/Spring workshops and professional development opportunities
  • Engage in ongoing collaborative planning with programs included in “UMKC Peer Mentoring” (First Gen Roo (FGR), Summer Bridge, Peer Academic Leadership (PAL), Bloch Scholars, Professional Career Escalators (PCE), and KC Scholars) to efficiently support student who participate in multiple programs
  • Assist Mentoring Coordinator and Director in delivering course material for academic preparation courses
  • Demonstrate effective interpersonal and customer service skills in working with students, faculty, alumni, employers, and other professionals
  • Greet and provide information and assistance to office visitors to provide service/support using own knowledge of office services, policies, and procedures
  • Perform related duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications


A Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience and at least 2 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary

$17.43/hr
