Position Summary

Our group is studying parasites that cause serious illness in young children. We are using cell culture systems, including stem cell derived organoids, to study the molecular interactions between the parasite and host cells. Our long-term goal is to understand how the parasite causes disease in order to support development of better treatment.

The position includes coordinating the activity of the group by maintaining stem cell and differentiated cultures, conducting assays, and assisting with research projects.

Job Description

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Performs complex analysis/projects according to research protocols, explaining methods and procedures to other technicians.
  • Provides for data entry and current data files on research projects. Monitors data to ensure consistent quality.
  • May perform preliminary statistical analysis of data.
  • Prepares tissue cultures, reagents, materials for experiments, standards, etc.
  • Assures compliance with established safety procedures and maintains required documentation on laboratory and specimen conditions.
  • Ensures lab conditions and equipment are properly cleaned and maintained in accordance with established procedures.
  • Assists in the training and development of technicians, acting as a group leader.
  • Assists with general lab maintenance and cleaning.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Working Conditions

This position works in laboratory environment with potential exposure to biological, chemical and radioactive hazards. The individual must be physically able to wear protective equipment and to provide standard care to research animals.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience with cell culture and sterile techniques.
  • Experience with immunofluorescence microscopy, Western blotting and PCR.
  • Working knowledge of spreadsheets and statistical analyses.
  • Experience and willingness to work with animals.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and communicate with laboratory staff and investigators.
  • Ability to maintain complete and organized records/reports.
  • Working knowledge of computer software and general lab equipment.

Required Qualifications

Master’s degree with two years of experience in a laboratory setting or an equivalent combination of education and experience equaling seven years.

Salary Range

$17.86 - $30.39 / Hourly

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
