Department Profile:

Institutional Securities Technology (IST) is a technology division which develops enterprise systems in support of Morgan Stanley's Institutional Securities Group, including Equities, Fixed Income, Commodities, Investment Banking, Research, and Global Capital Markets. Reliability and Production Engineering (RPE) is a production-oriented discipline focused on improving service availability, latency, scalability, performance, and efficiency for technology products within IST.

Role :
This is an Executive Director position within Reliability and Production Engineering (RPE) leveraging SRE Principles and Practices based out of New York location.
This role is looking for a multi skilled professional with very strong technical leadership, people management skills to deliver critical services ensuring Morgan Stanley operates a highly stable, reliable, and resilient front-to-back plant amidst evolving Market, Firm, and Technology events.
The candidate will be committed to Agile principles and presents an excellent opportunity for the candidate to shape the next generation of the platform(s) and guide the teams globally to deliver innovative solutions to meet the business objectives.

Responsibilities:
    Provide technical leadership to high performing global team and provide oversight in plant stability across businesses.
    Navigate global technology department and wider organization to better understand problems and to help implement solutions.
    Represent the stability function on associated program governance committees and working groups.
    Proactive risk identification, prevention and detection controls and processes, and metrics to enhance plant stability.
    Leverage and continue to build strong knowledge and expertise of operational resilience including strategic change initiatives, to support effective review and challenge of the associated Operational Risk profile and controls
    Collaboration with other regional counterparts on technical and functional initiatives.
    Automate to drive efficiency. You will identify and create automation to eliminate manual day to day support activities; scope and create automation for deployment, management and visibility of our services.
    Manage Service reliability by managing risk
    Define service level indicators (SLIs), objectives (SLOs), and agreements (SLAs).
    Implement best practices for building successful monitoring and alerting systems
    You will use your expertise to tune and push our systems beyond their normal limit.
    You will work closely with engineering/development teams to design, build, and maintain systems and help them decide on products to use, schema design and query tuning.
    You will troubleshoot issues across the entire stack: hardware, software, application and network.
    You will mentor other SREs on standard methodology for everything from monitoring to troubleshooting complex code and database issues.
    Represent the SRE organization in design reviews and operational readiness exercises for new and existing services.
    Participate in on-call rotation and periodic conference calls with other specialists from other time zones.

QUALIFICATIONS

Technical Skills:
    Bachelor's degree or equivalent, ideally in an area related to technology infrastructure (e.g., engineering, computer science, etc.)
    15 to 20 years of experience support technology used in financial products
    Good understanding of observability related frameworks.
    Strong knowledge of infrastructure, including planning, system and data recovery
    Demonstrated ability to collaborate and manage across multiple functional areas while maintaining suitable independence.
    Confidence to take ideas forward and to challenge others, where appropriate.
    Strong team skills with ability to support talent development, build team cohesiveness and coordinate multiple team activities across a range of processes and product areas
    Strong organization skills with the ability to multitask and prioritize; ability to work under pressure and to tight deadlines
    Experience in software development: automation-related experience valued in particular. Scripting languages such as bash, python, ruby, or compiled languages such as C, C#, JAVA, Scala and Go are most relevant but others are acceptable. One higher level language is desired.
    Hands on experience using Enterprise Tools such as App Dynamic, Grafana, Splunk, Dynatrace
    Three Tier Support experience with DBs such as IBM, DB2, Sybase, Mongo, Green Plum, KDB
    Deep understanding of operating system level concepts such as processes, memory allocation, and the network stack an understanding of how applications are affected by the above, and ability to debug same
    Generally speaking, practical experience running large scale online systems is always an advantage.
    Awareness of, and ability to reason about modern software & systems architectures, including load-balancing, queueing, caching, distributed systems failure modes, micro services, Cloud, etc.


Desired Skills:
    Hands on experience with a scripting language and strong understanding of databases
    Prior experience as a developer in a large-scale financial firm
    The candidate must be already doing a similar role

Expected base pay rates for the role will be between 180,000 and 260,000 per year at the commencement of employment. However, base pay if hired will be determined on an individualized basis and is only part of the total compensation package, which, depending on the position, may also include commission earnings, incentive compensation, discretionary bonuses, other short and long-term incentive packages, and other Morgan Stanley sponsored benefit programs.
