Job Duties and Responsibilities
This position supports EHS&RM operations and functions, department wide. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Emergency eyewash/safety shower and chemical fume hood annual testing and certification.
  • Program Compliance Specialist support including supporting EHS&RM Safety Hub, EHS&RM website and online safety training maintenance functions.
  • Safety Specialist support, as needed, for hazardous material abatement (asbestos / mold) activities, routine landfill compliance functions, safety compliance inspections, sealed source leak testing, routine contamination surveys, etc.
  • Support instructor-led safety training including assisting with course set up and class monitoring activities for courses that require it (Forklift, MEWP, UAS, etc.)
  • Performs other miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned to support all operations at EHS&RM.
Classification Summary
Under general supervision, assist with the development and maintenance of EHS&RM programs, permits, procedures, protocols, and business processes that support the primary objectives and overall mission of the EHS&RM department. Provides support and assistance to operations, hazard material inventory management, hazardous waste disposal processes, inspection programs, safety training and other EHS&RM regulatory compliance activities and programs. Assist with accident, injuries and loss control investigations, reviews and assessments including record tracking, reports and other documentation used to determine cause and trends, in assigned areas of responsibility.
Classification Standard Duties
Assist with the management of focused EHS&RM programs designed to safeguard employee and public safety, minimize property loss, protect the environment and help ensure university compliance with the regulatory requirements in areas administered by the EHS&RM department. This may include general administrative support, such as fiscal and procurement needs, file management and basic clerical tasks. Examples of the types of programs managed by EHS&RM include, but are not limited to, hazard communication, chemical / hazardous material safety, accident, injury / illness investigation and reporting; exposure evaluations, hazardous waste management, laboratory safety, shop safety, laser safety, radiation safety, indoor air quality, respiratory safety/respirator fit-testing, lock-out/tag-out, permit-required confined spaces, hazardous material shipping / receiving, general construction safety, agricultural / field safety, forklift, aerial/man lifts, crane and rigging safety. Assist with the performance, documentation and recordkeeping of routine and non-routine inspections and other formal assessments to identify and correct health and safety hazards in NMSU facilities and operations including laboratories, shops, farms, mechanical rooms, other hazardous areas, offices, classrooms and common areas. Assist with generation, documentation and tracking of EHS&RM hazard reviews, assessments, and investigations, which may include recommendations for mitigating or correcting physical and operational safety deficiencies. Assist with the development, delivery, promotion and training record management of a large assortment of EHS&RM training offerings, in both instructor-led and online formats, as assigned. Communicate with the university community and assist with inquires and questions on EHS&RM protocols, procedures and training designed to enhance employee / public safety, minimize property losses, protect the environment, and help ensure the university remains in compliance with applicable EHS&RM regulations. Other duties will vary as needed but may include, but not be limited to assisting with indoor air quality assessments, incident / accident response and investigations, worker exposure assessments, work place and operational hazard evaluations and other types of industrial hygiene assessments and evaluations including activity tracking and documentation. The use and maintenance of common industrial hygiene equipment used to measure work place conditions, evaluate worker exposures and perform various safety assessments may be required. Assist with the development, maintenance, review and updating of EHS&RM plans, procedures and web-based information, in the areas of responsibility. Performs other related duties as required.
Knowledge

This position has been established as a primary key position under the “All Hazard Continuity of Operations Plan (COOP)” and is essential to operational continuity and/or recovery. In an emergency situation, primary key positions are required to report to work unless directed by supervisor or public safety authorities not to report for health and safety reasons.
