GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:

The Martinos Center for Biomedical Imaging is one of the world’s premier research centers devoted to the development and application of advanced biomedical imaging technologies. The Center is part of the Department of Radiology at Massachusetts General Hospital and affiliated with both Harvard Medical School and MIT. Our faculty are developing first-of-a-kind tools and applying them to solve challenges in neuroscience, oncology, cardiology, and other clinical domains.

The Martinos Center is in the process of building a state-of-the-art makerspace to allow Martinos Center researchers and collaborators to imagine, prototype, test, refine and create the next generation of biomedical tools. The new facility will catalyze innovation by providing the tools and support for rapid prototyping of mechanical and electronic devices and components, including CAD workstations, 3D scanners and printers, laser cutters, CNC machine tools, and printed circuit board fabrication, assembly and testing.

The Makerspace Manager will oversee and manage day-to-day operations of the facility including managing and facilitating diverse stakeholder needs, managing day-to-day operations, developing and conducting user training, maintaining equipment and lab space, overseeing resource use and ordering process, and ensuring safe and proper use of all machinery.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Oversee and manage makerspace, including both clean and dirty lab areas.
  • Maintain equipment, order supplies, and identify opportunities to upgrade and purchase new equipment. Oversee and maintain budget.
  • Develop and maintain safety protocols and procedures. Ensure that protocols and procedures are followed by all users.
  • Create and teach training programs on safe use of equipment. Develop safety badging system to ensure all users are properly trained.
  • Work closely with core staff and administrative team on billing for services, as needed.
  • Collaborate with various PI’s and research personnel to assist with needs related to makerspace.
  • Oversee makerspace programing, including specialized training courses and community engagement events.
  • Work closely with stakeholders within the Martinos Center. Build custom prototypes/equipment using makerspace machinery for PIs, as necessary.
  • Partner with external industrial and philanthropic partners to grow Makerspace capabilities
  • Maintain and update content on internal and external lab web pages.
  • Other duties as assigned and required.

SKILLS & COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:

  • Experience with 3D scanners and printers, laser cutters, CAD workstations and relevant software.
  • Experience working in a machine shop environment, specifically with CNC machine tools, manual mills, lathes, drill presses, and other related tools.
  • Experience developing and overseeing safety and training programs. Proven track record of maintaining safe and compliant work environments.
  • Ability to make independent effective decisions.
  • Aptitude for technical problem solving
  • Ability to effectively supervise others
  • Ability to make decisions that are in the best interest of the Makerspace, especially as they relate to the safety of the user base

EDUCATION:

  • Required: Bachelor's Degree
  • Preferred: Master's Degree

EXPERIENCE:

  • Required: Minimum of 7 years of directly related and progressively more responsible experience in a research related field.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:

  • Supervisory experience required

FISCAL REPSONSIBLITY:

  • Manages lab-related finances, mainly budgets from research grants, and handles purchasing when needed.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Position involves supporting several PIs and their laboratories within the Center.
  • Position involves working in a fast-paced makerspace environment with heavy machinery.
