Position Summary:

The Registered Nurse is a member of the staff within both Treatment Services (substance use) and The Better Living Center (mental health) clinics. The RN conducts medical assessments required by OASAS and/or NYS OMH as part of the clinical intake workflow; coordinates urine toxicology tests (collected by others) being sent to lab; administers some intra-muscular psychiatric injections; assists the psychiatric nurse practitioner with various tasks, including administration of medication assisted treatment, prior authorizations and checking vitals (weight, blood pressure, etc.); leads a preventative health education group; and conducts wellness checks as occasionally requested by general Fortune client population.

Clinical Expertise

The successful candidate will be experienced working with clients with variety of general health issues found among persons from disadvantaged lower-income communities. Person will be competent taking blood draws, administering intra-muscular injections, and other general medical procedures.

Clinical Engagement & Productivity Skills

This role is client-facing, and must be skilled at establishing rapport with clients who may be generally dis-inclined towards medical treatment, and obtaining background health information quickly and accurately. This includes asking about sensitive topics such as clients sexual orientation and HIV status. Person will also be effective at persuading clients to submit to HIV and HEP-C finger-stick screenings. Successful candidate will be comfortable working flexibly in a loosely structured environment in which clients schedule adherence is often low. Despite this, candidate should be comfortable achieving productivity targets.

Personal Organization, Time Management and Documentation Successful candidate will be excellent at maintaining personal organization in pursuing numerous tasks in parallel, managing his/her time to maximize efficiency, and will be good at completing paperwork accurately and in timely manner. All of this requires good computer navigation skills as well as effective typing speed.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Conduct and document medical and/or mental health assessments;
  • Participates in case conferences and provides follow-up on recommendations by psychiatric nurse practitioner and/or Medical Director;
  • Works with clients and staff to assist clients on health/wellness related issues;
  • Provides referrals and follow up for clients that have medical and/or mental health needs, including to Fortunes Case Management Program for medical care coordination as appropriate.
  • Conducts quality improvement reviews on client files and database;
  • Phlebotomy and specimen processing; coordinate all external laboratory urine drug toxicology test processing; conduct rapid testing for Hep C and HIV; random toxicology testing; administer IV drugs as are occasionally prescribed by the doctor or nurse practitioner.
  • Participate in observation of clients during the process of Medication Assisted Treatment inductions
  • Other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

May supervises interns and volunteers as required. Carries out supervisory responsibilities of such interns and volunteers in accordance with the organizations policies and applicable laws.

Qualifications:

  • RN degree from accredited school and a valid NYS license;
  • Experience with medical issues related to substance use;
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in an outpatient clinic setting, preferably mental health and/or substance abuse related;
  • Some work or internship experience in dealing with psychiatric issues, trauma or incarceration a plus;
  • Strong computer skills, particularly in electronically entering case notes;
  • Bilingual is a plus; and

Travel Requirements While position is based in Fortune Societys main Long Island City facility, the position may require some services to be delivered at Fortunes Harlem or Bronx facilities.
