The Montgomery County School Board in Virginia is now accepting applications for a Reading Specialist position that is currently available at Shawsville Middle School for the 2023-2024 school year.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
To provide an intervention program based on the science of reading that addresses the needs of middle schools students who are reading/writing two grade levels (or more) below their assigned grade placement.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Hold or be eligible for a Virginia Teacher’s License with appropriate endorsement as a Reading Specialist
- Have knowledge of and experience with the Virginia English Language Arts Standards of Learning (grades 6-8)
- Have experience in utilizing the standards to design intervention lesson plans that address the needs of students reading below grade-level expectations
- Have experience with administering and interpreting results of diagnostic assessments to create individualized intervention learning plans for students based on identified deficits
- Have experience in monitoring the progress of students based on intervention learning plans and utilizing on-going formative assessment results to adjust instruction
- Have experience in fostering an inclusive learning environment
- Have experience or working familiarity with Google Drive for instruction, collaboration and course expectations
- Have experience and expertise in using technology in instructional planning and delivery
- Demonstrate the ability to work and collaborate with a team of other teachers
- Demonstrate the ability to work effectively with parents and families
- Have effective written, verbal, presentation and interpersonal skills
- Ability to be dependable and punctual
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Knowledge of and training specific to the Virginia Department of Education's focus on evidence-based science-of-reading instruction (i.e., LETRS training)
