GENERAL SUMMARY:

Under general supervision and according to established policies and procedures, provides unarmed uniformed security/safety related services. The services performed support the department’s mission to provide high quality service and to protect persons and property from harm. May also perform duties of bicycle patrol officer.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: (The following duties and responsibilities are all essential job functions, as defined by the ADA, except those that begin with the word "May.")

Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of patients served. This includes knowledge of the physical and psychological needs of patients served and the ability to respond appropriately to those needs.

Officer Duties:

  • Patrols assigned areas of facilities and grounds on foot or in motorized vehicle according to established schedule and investigates unusual occurrences. Reports incidents or apparent potential loss of Hospital, employee, patient or visitor property through fire, theft or vandalism and if necessary, involve police and provide assistance during police investigation. Responds to all service calls in a timely, safe, professional and courteous manner that is timely, safe, professional and courteous manner.
  • Welcomes our customers to the Hospital. Provides timely and accurate directions to patients and visitors to insure they understand how to get to any location on Hospital Grounds. Whenever possible the individual(s) will be escorted to their destination.
  • Directs vehicle traffic in and around hospital facilities to prevent congestion. Ensures areas such as loading docks and ambulance unloading zones are cleared of unauthorized vehicles at all times. Issues parking citations to improperly parked vehicles and maintains record of citations.
  • Following established procedures, physically restrains unruly patients and/or visitors and individuals posing a threat to themselves, visitors, hospital employees and/or property and if necessary, involves police in removing visitors and provides assistance including court testimony.
  • Administers appropriate control systems to protect patient and employee valuables and hospital equipment and supplies, and monitors handling of lost and found items.
  • Checks to ensure hospital doors and windows are securely locked and inspects equipment, alarms, fire extinguisher and other equipment to ensure same are properly working. Notifies appropriate personnel of problems, as necessary.
  • Investigates and documents thefts, accidents and other incidents in order to obtain related evidence necessary to determine individuals involved. Carefully prepares required documentation to insure neatness, accuracy and completeness.
  • Arranges timely re-supply or service through the appropriate parties.
  • Ensures that assigned post is neat and properly equipped.
  • Safeguards patient, employee, departmental and hospital information by disclosing information only to those authorized and that have a need to know.
  • Adheres to hospital and departmental safety and infection control procedures.
  • Participates in departmental in-services and meetings to enhance job performance and improve skill repertory.
  • Performs duties of a Uniformed Bicycle Patrol Officer if assigned. The duties consist of, but are not limited to:
  • Patrol of hospital grounds and parking structures during daylight or early evening hours and/or during special events and activities
  • Provides service and assistance to patient and visitors
  • Responds to on-campus emergencies or service calls affording minimal response time
  • Performs other related duties such as processing receipt and release of bodies from the morgue, provides escort service for daily deposits, answering telephones and relaying messages.

Dispatch Duties:

  • Maintains a record of all communication, service requests or inquiries received or made in the dispatch center.
  • Monitors console equipment for incoming telephone or radio calls, alarm indicators . Initiates the appropriate security/safety response procedure and/or notifications (e.g., fire alarms, hazmat event or bomb threat).
  • Safeguards, inventories, issues and collects all key devices stored in the key cabinet.
  • Responds to service requests and/or information inquiries received by telephone, radio or in person.
  • Monitors officer activity to assess unit availability, deployment and patrol density.
  • Assigns appropriate sequence numbers to reports. Enters information from reports and other sources into the Actrack system.
  • Collects and sorts all report documents for review by the Lead Officer of the shift prior to the end of the shift.
  • Contacts various Edward departments and/or outside agencies in the event of an emergency. Among these are: Code Blue cardiac arrest team, Facilities and Engineering, fire department, police department, hospital administration and public safety management.
  • Submits requests for dispatch center supplies to the appropriate parties in a timely manner.
  • Submits service and/or repair requests for equipment related to the dispatch center.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

Required Education and/or Experience:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Minimum of one of year experience in a customer-focused service-based organization

Preferred Education and/or Experience:

  • Knowledge base developed through a minimum of two years of experience in law enforcement, military or private security
  • Experience in a healthcare environment
  • Fundamental understanding of computers, loss prevention and fire/security technology

Required License and/or Certification:

  • Valid Illinois Firearm Owner’s Identification Card is required within 90 days of start date in position
  • Current CPR certification issued either by American Heart Association or Red Cross within 90 days of start date in position
  • A valid driver’s license is required. If the incumbent uses their personal vehicle, the incumbent must maintain automobile liability coverage as required by law and evidence of such coverage may be requested.
  • CPI (Crisis Prevention Intervention) certification within six months of hire

Preferred License and/or Certification:

  • Attainment of certification by the International Association for Healthcare Security and Safety (IAHSS) for their Basic Healthcare Security Officer training course within twelve months of start date in position.
