Job Description: Patent Agent/Attorney

We are looking for a highly motivated patent agent/attorney to join our legal group to advance intellectual property initiatives for our cutting-edge RNA technology. In this role, the individual will have the opportunity to interact and collaborate with all levels of the organization including our R&D team, external counsel, and other external consultants. Our ideal candidate will bring strong relevant law firm or in-house experience. This role reports to Vice President, Intellectual Property and is expected to grow with the company as we discover and develop life-saving therapies for patients in need.

This individual will be responsible for strategic IP development as well as patent drafting, prosecution, and FTO and patentability analysis. This individual will also support our transactional work and be responsible for contract review. The individual will actively collaborate with colleagues across disciplines, participate in team meetings, and contribute toward creative problem solving.

Responsibilities:

  • Prepare and prosecute patent applications, focusing on chemical modifications and drug substance.
  • Responsible for identifying patentable inventions through frequent interactions with project teams at all stages of R&D.
  • Responsible for patentability analyses of inventions and advisability of filing patent applications covering those inventions.
  • Work with outside IP counsel to achieve positive, practical outcomes and obtain advice regarding related risks and opportunities, as needed.
  • Responsible for freedom-to-operate analyses and preparation of opinions with the focus on chemistry related topics.
  • Support IP diligence and provide other IP support for business development opportunities.
  • Conduct searches for competitive IP and, together with project teams and the leadership team, help monitor, evaluate, and collate the competitive IP landscape.
  • Assist with transactional work and help enhance the legal department's organizational infrastructure (e.g., IP docketing and contract management).
  • Contract review and negotiation.
  • Communicate with internal stakeholders to understand business needs and ensure IP protection aligns with those needs.
  • Identify IP risks and communicate those risks to internal stakeholders for discussion and resolution.

Requirements / Qualifications:

  • Patent agent/attorney with 4+ years of patent drafting and prosecution experience.
  • USPTO bar admission
  • A graduate degree in Chemistry (synthetic organic/medicinal chemistry) is required, and a PhD (synthetic organic/medicinal chemistry) is preferred.
  • Strong academic credentials and excellent references.
  • Prior in-house experience in biotech/pharmaceutical industry is a plus.
  • Highly productive, proactive, and transparent with strong ability to handle multiple projects in a fast-paced work environment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential.

Compensation:

  • This is a full-time position, Monday-Friday 8am – 5pm

Pay: $85,000.00 - $175,000.00 per year
