Job Summary

This posting will be used to hire a seasonal, part-time (80%) Parks & Trails Associate position located at Glacial Lakes State Park, near Starbuck, Minnesota. The anticipated season dates are from mid-May to mid-September each year. The shifts are 8 hours in length and will typically be scheduled between 8:00 AM – 12:00 AM. The days of work will vary and will include weekends, evenings, and holidays. This position performs a variety of tasks involved in routine operations and maintenance of Glacial Lakes State Park. This position assists park visitors, works outdoors, and gets to do a variety of jobs, including night security duties as scheduled.
Responsibilities include:
  • To sell vehicle permits, camping permits, ice, firewood and Nature store items for the convenience of park visitors, so that park obligations to the public are met and the State receives just revenues for the services provided.
  • Operate the Recreation Dynamics campground reservation system to ensure the availability of campsites to campers holding reservations.
  • Provide information to the general public and Glacial Lakes State Park visitors in a friendly and courteous manner so they are aware of park facilities, services, fees and regulations.
  • To perform maintenance on buildings, grounds, facilities and equipment, plus other operational tasks.
  • To perform park security so that park visitors and state park property and resources are protected from unsafe conditions, illegal acts, or other dangerous or damaging situations.
  • To assure responsibility for safety and accountability for safety performance so that employee will perform tasks according to established safety procedures and reduce injuries and equipment damage.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Ability to provide written information and instructions to the public and other park employees.
  • Arithmetic skills sufficient to accurately collect money from the public for various fees.
  • Ability to read and comprehend instructions on labels, instruction manuals, etc.
  • Ability to operate a phone, two way radio, computer, cash register, and other office equipment.
  • Willingness and ability to work alone at night in the park.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle, tractor, snowmobile, snow blower, ATV, lawn mower, small hand tools, and other equipment and tools.
  • Knowledge of park rules, policies, and facilities.
  • Record keeping skills.
  • Computer skills.
  • Experience in the construction trades.
  • Security experience and training.
  • First Aid and CPR training.

Physical Requirements

Requires occasionally lifting articles such as 50 pounds’ maximum and frequently lifting and/or carrying objects such as heavy tools and file boxes. This job may require walking or standing to a significant degree on rough terrain or may involve sitting most of the time with pushing and pulling of arm and/or leg controls.

Additional Requirements

*This position requires an unrestricted Class D Driver’s License with a clear driving record*
