The Packaging team is a cross platform engineering group that manages products for multiple platforms and market segments. As a Packaging Configuration Engineer in the Engine Packaging group, you will lead teams through product configuration and structuring requirements to meet marketing and factory requirements, while also performing when required as a project lead on component changes to meet technical requirements/specifications. Teams will consist of both internal and external partners, and you will be responsible for ensuring the proper product rules created related to design, integration, application, and ready for market requirements are met for the packaged generator set in each situation. You will manage the planning and execution of project tasks for product introduction on programs that you support, develop and grow your generator set application knowledge and team leadership skills, and broaden your professional network.

The successful candidate will have experience in component or system design, package/engine application, and/or system integration. Additionally, he or she will have strong people skills for collaborating with process partners and interested in leading teams to identify and implement solutions for issue resolution. Top candidates will have experience in all and/or some of these areas: engineering and factory systems, Med-V, 3500, and C175 products, demonstrated ability to deliver quality results with a sense of urgency, and experience delivering NPI, CPI, and/or cost reduction projects.

The role of the Packaging Configuration Engineer is to clearly be communicating the product structure requirements, while gaining input from the team (engineering, factory, and customer) and final release to allow product introduction into a pricelist. Responsibilities also include product TDM/VDRA, TMI, customer General Dimension Drawings, and oversight program/project timelines, ensuring technical and implementation tasks are correct and aligned to NPI and/or CPI processes. Additional roles include project leadership of product changes/updates not performed directly under a chartered NPI/CPI (eg. Component cost reductions, improvements).

The Packaging Configuration Engineer works complimentary to the Program/Project Technical leader, working to ensure program requirements are meet on how the product is offered and aligned to facility requirements to assemble the Bill of Material. Product configuration leaders must have strong communication skills and interpersonal skills; as well as, ever increasing skills in the role-based competencies of Managing Vision & Purpose, Decision Quality, and Negotiating. This role is good for those individuals seeking to become program technical leader, having exposure to NPI/CPI process, product application, and sub-project accountability.

This is not a supervisory position.

Job Duties/Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

  • Provide system/process guidance on needs product configuration
  • Lead teams in the configuration release to meet design, integration, and application of components, systems, and products for marketing introduction
  • Ensure closure of pricelist top down model quality issues
  • Identify, plan and complete projects on time
  • Leverage VDRA/VB processes to proactively resolve potential package build issues
  • Coordinate and resolve product structure issues between Marketing team and L3-L4 teams to meet implementation requirements.
  • Work with marketing and factory teams on product configuration requirements and conduct trade-off discussions to meet NPI program timeline targets.
  • Provide support for shop NPI builds/issues by investigating, coordinating with L3s, identifying Root Cause and Corrective Action (RCCA) and providing Interim Corrective Action (ICA)

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in an accredited Engineering program + 2 years of Engineering experience
  • 1 year of design experience and factory support
  • Experience of Product configuration (preferably Generator sets)
  • Must have strong problem-solving skills, a good mechanical and/or electrical/electronic aptitude, and good communications skills

Top Candidates will also have:

  • Prior packaging/engine application experience
  • Price list implementation/management process and product structuring knowledge.
  • Prior experience with product releasing and/or working with global facilities.
  • Project planning experience
  • Exposure to Caterpillar Quality including Warranty, DPU, CPI
  • Exposure to Operations, Purchasing, Supply Chain teams
  • Exposure to NPI/CPI/Warranty/DPU
  • Advanced computer skills PACN, PLCN, CTS (Change Tracking System) familiarity
  • SAP, EOMP, CSQ, Shop change/Green sheet familiarity
  • VisMockup knowledge, some Creo experience, VDRA knowledge
  • AQE, OASIS, TMI and other CAT web tools proficiency
  • MS Office expertise (Excel, PowerPoint)
