The Milieu Counselor provides individual, group, and family therapy services to youth in a residential setting. Utilizes a strengths-based and trauma-focused approach in developing relationships, assessment, and development of service plans.

Qualifications

Education

Mental Health Professional (MHP) - must meet Medicaid 132 requirements: i. High School Diploma or GED with five years’ experience in a mental health setting OR ii. Bachelor's degree in any other field with two years of supervised clinical experience in a mental health setting OR iii. Medicaid approved Bachelor’s degree

Experience

At least one year of relevant experience Certification/Licensure: Clinical licensure in Illinois is preferred. Other: Minimum 21 years of age Valid driver’s license and an acceptable driving record with OHU required levels of coverage for auto insurance 2

DCFS background check & approval to transport youth Must be physically able to complete Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI) restraint training

Job Duties Include:

  • Completes initial and ongoing assessments of all clients on caseload in line with Medicaid Rule 132 when required
  • Develops individualized treatment plans that address presenting issues for all clients on caseload. Follows Medicaid rule 132 when required
  • Provides individual, family, and group therapy services as outlined in the clients’ individual treatment plans
  • Completes service documentation reflecting therapeutic interactions with clients. Follows Medicaid rule 132
  • Attends, facilitates and offers staffings, meetings, and training as requested by the administrative team or Director of Programs
  • Provides on-call and crisis intervention services regularly
  • Leads and participates in consultations with staff to help meet the clinical needs of our youth and their families
  • Conducts specialized groups for educational, social skills development, and supportive services
  • Maintains DCFS outcomes
  • Transports clients (youth) and their families to mandated court hearings, school appointments, doctor appointments or other case-related appointments  Performs other related duties as assigned

Required Skills

1. Proficient computer skills in a Microsoft Windows environment and adaptive skills to expand software application skills as necessary

2. Patience, positive attitude, and willingness to develop greater skills and understanding of youth with behavior disorders and/or mental health issues

3. Willingness to engage with youth in social and recreational activities, as well as act in a surrogate parent role including assisting with homework, chores, attending appointments, school activities and events and any DCFS-related expectations

4. Ability to exercise discretion and ensure confidentiality

Physical Demands & Work Environment The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The job requires standing for moderate amounts of time, as well as stooping, squatting, and running.

The employee must be able to walk, squat/kneel, sit on floor, see, hear, speak with youth to ensure youth’s health and safety. The position requires visual and auditory acuity within professionally determined normal ranges, with correction if need; and manual dexterity sufficient to operate a computer and office equipment, including, but not limited to, the telephone, computer, and copier.

The employee is occasionally required to lift items up to 20 pounds. The employee must be able to participate in TCI restraints as needed. The employee works in a group home setting and may encounter unpredictable clients. Duties are performed inside with climate control and outdoors with varied weather conditions (depending on season). This position performs tasks that involve possible exposure to communicable diseases, blood, body fluids or tissues. This position may require occasional travel in the local and regional area.
