Summary:

The Mental Health Specialist can perform a wide variety of settings and is the global caretaker of the milieu in preventing or minimizing client crisis. The Specialist provides assessment and intervention as needed. The Specialist provides education, leadership, and/or supervision for technicians, newer employees, students and clients as directed. On a daily basis the Specialist is responsible for evaluating programs offered to clients and adjusts them according to client needs. Finally, the Specialist has the flexibility to perform in a high-level multi-capacity role, i.e., working with a knowledge base to perform the job description with clients of all ages from pediatric to geriatric.
Experience/Education Requirements:
  • As of January 1, 2018 , new hires are required to obtain a Bachelor's degree in Behavioral Science within 1 year
  • Two years of experience as a Mental Health technician preferred.

    License or Certification Requirements:

Responsibilities:

  • Able to administer SASSI form and generate score for interpretation by MD
  • Able to perform mental status evaluations in ER setting to report to appropriate Dr. to determine appropriate disposition.
  • Able to effectively follow through with recommended dispositions.
  • Assists to maintain MHU standards of safety and cleanliness within the therapeutic milieu.
  • Conducts group and ensures that milieu programming occurs as scheduled.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of the action and side effects of psychotropic medications.
  • Demonstrates expertise in developing and maintaining therapeutic relationships within the guidelines of the patients' treatment plan.
  • Documents observations, interventions, and progress towards planned outcomes according to charting standards.
  • Monitors assigned patients and assists with their personal care needs.
  • Possesses the knowledge and skill required to evaluate patients' mental status to determine treatment needs/interventions.
  • Provides input into and assists in developing and updating patient treatment plans.
  • Reports patient observations (assigned, group, milieu) to RN every shift.
  • Utilizes approved behavioral management techniques when appropriate.

Smell: Needed to detect the odor of ETHO on patients, smoke in patients' rooms or electrical hazards.
Hearing: Required for patient safety, telephone use, intercom announcements (i.e., Code 99) and taking vital signs.
Touch: Required to perform percussive assessments and to comfort patients. Also needed to manipulate tools and equipment.
