Description:

The Health Professions Readiness Education Program (HealthPREP) at Emory is an 8-week summer program (May 30 - July 21, 2023) facilitated by Emory School of Medicine (SOM) in partnership with the Rollins School of Public Health (RSPH). HealthPREP is open to undergraduate and graduate scholars interested in pursuing a career within the health professions. We provide opportunities to increase competitiveness for admissions, professional development activities, and exposure to primary care settings, as well as research principles. The overall purpose of HealthPREP is to facilitate the entry of qualified students from educationally and economically disadvantaged backgrounds, into health-related graduate and professional schools.

JOB SUMMARY:

HealthPREP is looking to hire five (5) SOM learners to serve as tutors for the HealthPREP scholars. We are requesting 3 tutors specific for MCAT material and 2 tutors specific for GRE material. The MCAT/GRE tutors’ primary responsibilities involve instructional engagement, including answering questions about material presented in the scholar’s Kaplan MCAT/GRE Prep Course throughout the summer program. HealthPREP MCAT/GRE tutors are expected to be in good academic standing and foster a supportive learning environment. HealthPREP tutors will receive a stipend award to cover approximately 8 hours per week beginning in mid-April through the end of July 2023.

GENERAL POSITION RESPOSIBILITES:

  • Ensure HealthPREP scholars receive additional instructional support regarding MCAT or GRE-related material
  • Demonstrate professionalism through preparedness and communication
  • Interact with HealthPREP learners to facilitate a collaborative, positive, and engaging environment
  • Provide ‘best practices’, ‘effective study tips’, and personalized feedback as the scholars prepare themselves for the MCAT/GRE

SPECIFIC DUTIES:

  • Required work hours (~ 8 hours/week): Program preparation will occur from April – May. Tutoring services will occur from May 30 - July 21, 2023. Tutors will schedule dates/times with HealthPREP scholars during scholars’ study session blocks (preferably during 8 AM – 5 PM).
  • Each tutor will be responsible for providing 1 hour of one-on-one tutoring to 5 HealthPREP scholars each week, and ~3 hrs/week for planning, preparation, and communication with scholars.
  • Record HealthPREP scholar attendance each week.
  • Tutors are responsible for their own transportation/parking.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION:

  • Mastery of material presented in the MCAT or GRE (depending on tutoring position applying for)
  • Track record of previous tutoring, teaching, or training experience is preferred
  • Availability to tutor in-person 5 hours/week from May 30 - July 21, 2023.
  • Demonstrated academic success
  • Exceptional leadership skills and passion for mentoring
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Proficiency in communication and interpersonal skills
  • Prior experience working with historically underrepresented and/or minoritized populations or organizations (through research, work experience, or other teaching engagements). Qualified students from historically underrepresented and/or minoritized groups in health-related graduate and professional schools are highly encouraged to apply.
